Gosh I have spent all day trying to get back on BYC. Seems it didn’t like my email anymore and shut me down.

I don’t generally do more that lurk here, but I had to chime in to this discussion. By FAR, Speckled Sussex chickens are our favorite chickens of all time closely followed by Light Sussex. We have had a variety of show quality and hatchery quality chickens for over 20 years now and that is the conclusion my husband and I have both come to. They are friendly, sweet natured, inquisitive, smart (for a chicken) and great foragers.

We thought very seriously about becoming breeders of Speckled Sussex a couple years ago but decided against it as we didn’t want to exhibit or have too too many chickens. We felt a decision like that shouldn’t be taken lightly especially in light of the fact there are few breeders of great quality ones as it is. We would have hated to become one more farm that had good intentions but fell flat.

On our perfect farm I believe we would have stricktly Sussex of all varieties in the best quality of the breed. We are down to three, two of which are ten years old. Chickens generally die of old age on our farm. Sussex are a great breed of chicken.

Pepper is on left. She is sassy and vocal. She hates being confined to her huge fenced area and often flies over the 4 foot fence lol.

At last candle of the 12 Speckled Sussex eggs that were shipped the AC are very saddled. I thought they would be as the shipping box was a used Amazon box and it was smashed. Eggs weren’t cracked. Still hopeful as 8 of the 12 are developing.
Due the Thursday before Easter.

Mine just hatched out some babies! Speckled Sussex is my favorite breed. They grow slower...but they go broody quite often. They do get more white on them each year which is y I usually keep my darkest ones for first years. This one is two years old in this picture.

will someone please help me sex these babies... the one on the right has a curved tail and white comb and is smaller. The one with the tail pointing up which I though meant hen has a redder comb and is crazy..

The first one of yours looks female...and second looks male...
