Oh my gosh so thankful you found that little one. Do you think something got to the nest and that’s why she abandoned them?
I think it was just that she is young and inexperienced. The nest was in the coop.

Yeah, glad I found him. I'd noticed that not all the babies were with mom (this was before the catastrophe) so I walked around listening for peeps. Little bugger was tough to catch! He ran right into the long grass to get away from me!

Today's progress...

- Junior the PTSD little duck shook of the fear and actually went and ate from the public mixed-grains plate - OK she did it when the others were gorging on pellets but still it's a giant step forward from just sitting around and not eating unless in the crate

- the same Junior is now able to jump out of her private swimming pool and run to join the other ducks, and is getting harder to catch, which is a very good sign

Today's thoughts...

- it's hot and the ducks are very noticeably hiding in the shade, 30+ C (86+ F) is forecast all the upcoming week... what if I run the sprinklers, they should be a game and a benefit for them? (They run from a well, not from mains water, thankfully)
It's a blessing that you have a well. We only have our city water which is not cheap and I use it enough just filling up all of the containers for the 20 ducks I have right now. I bet your ducks will love it as I spray mine off when I am filling up their containers and they just stand there all proud loving the feel of the water on them.

Independent! Lol

:hugsThank you. Yeah, she wasn't showing much interest in them any more. Found one (the black one actually) wandering along the side of the road all by himself!!!
So sorry to hear about your babies. I have never had a duck act like that towards its young so I have been Blessed. I hope that the ones you have left make it alright.

I have a small butterfly net that I used to catch mine with whenever I needed to get them and they were tiny. I also have a big rubber net from Walmart that I use on my big ducks so that I can get them when necessary. Their wings and feet got caught up in my threaded nets but the rubber one is great as none of the duck itself gets caught in it. It helps a lot whenever you have to chase one down.

My Muscovy that is sitting on one. Runner egg has broken the shell it looks like a big pip but I can see the membrane. She’s still sitting but I don’t know if their is any hope. I started out using medical tape now it’s big enough I put a piece of dry chicken shell over part of it, it’s all I have.
How much longer until hatch day? Can you candle it or did you already to check the progress of it. I am so sorry that the egg got broken and I pray that the little one makes it alright.

This coming week probably mid week. No movement but the egg is full of duckling. Only thing that gave me hope was after I laid the egg down in the shavings I had to go in the house to figure out what to do to protect that spot from getting further cracked and when I came back out the egg was still warm. When ducklings die in the shell the egg doesn't stay warm. I just hope that piece of chicken egg holds up to those feet.

I pray that all goes well, so happy to hear that the egg was still warm. Hopefully it will hatch just fine and everything will be ok. Thanks so much for the update.
