Need you folks' expert advice please. Are these two (the ones in front) Mulards? They stand much taller than 'scovies but hatched with the typical scovy multi-coloured bills. If I remember well, they also hatched a few days earlier than expected for 'scovies.

Please ignore how wet everything is, we got the tail end of Beryl and it's been raining near constantly for the past two days. EVERYTHING is MUCK!

Not being the expert for Muscovy dux, i don't see any 'scovie in that picture. Recently our local Farm Store had duxlings and i told the nice but clueless lady who was cleaning the bins that those were most likely Muscovy duxlings. That hook at the tip of the bill is a dead giveaway...

The younger ones in the top left are definitely Muscovy, as is the dirty whitish one to the right of the two in question. The white with the black head spot just behind them might be a Mulard, too, as it has other spots of black on it's body, not a typical thing for Scovies but very common in Mules.

excuse my ignorance what’s a mulard? muscovy/mallard derived mix?

Sooo we went through all the ducklings...

- checked their voices
- flipped every one on its back so it's (more or less) peaceful
- put on a (very comfy) clip-on leg band when we were "sure" whether male or female
- the bands were entirely well received
- now thinking about how to remove them if needed...

Unbanded pic :)

just wondering why the bands. won’t they be showing the greenheads and/or curly tail feathers soon anyway?
oh and how many of each did you get?
i’m pretty sure my last two little ducklings here that are going to be four weeks old tomorrow are both drakes and I’m now trying to decide which pen they’re going to live in.

They should get adult feathers in a month or two but we have already started selling the young drakes. This just makes it easier to act when somebody comes to pick them up.

We think that out of 10, there are for sure 4 girls, very probably 5, possibly even 6. 4 is what we were hoping for so we're happy with the result.
