How the heck do chickens survive in the wild. I'm mean, how can something with genes traceable so far back be so freaking fragile?

Chickens never existed in the wild. They are jungle fowl, sort of like Guineas that were selectively bred by people over generations..
Second, chickens are tougher than we think. Being a prey animal they reproduce by the hundreds. Thus Chicken Math.
Only a small percentage need to live to reproduce.
I think as a whole we worry too much about their health. I find life better when I take a more pessimistic outlook on them. They either live or die.
I have a hen hopping around on one foot. I am sure it hurts her. But she is never going to let me catch her to look at it, and if I do, I doubt I could “cure” it.
That does not mean I am without feelings, I just look at them as a farm animal and not pets, even though as a group they are “pets” no one chicken is a pet.
A bunch of mine are going to be residing in the freezer soon. Where their status is upgraded from pet to dinner.
I assume our keeping them in confinement adds to some of that versus running around free over thousands of acres....which would break the cycle of most pestsThey existed in the jungle with out our help, I wonder if in the wild they know what to eat that help clean out their systems of parasites and toxins. Like they know dust baths help keep external parasites off
