It seriously must be hawk day. I’m outside shoveling compost into my garden beds, so I let the chickens out for a bit since I’m literally right there. They weren’t out 5 minutes and a super spy hawk swoops down and grabs a baby silkie chick. I ran over there and threw my pitchfork near him. He took off and thankfully left the silkie unscathed. Back in the coop they go. That’s what I get for trying to let them free range for 2.5 seconds 😑.

Are you sure? It's BAD for people like myself.
I find myself checking it every couple of days lol.

That’s probably the worst thing I’ll ever know about. As it is I counted all of my eggs and I’ll be incubating 92 chicken eggs! Various breeds. PLUS I have a dozen eggs under my silkies and I’ll probably put a dozen under the serama when they come in next week. Send help.

With my luck, I’ll hatch 91 roosters and 1 lone hen. That’s about my odds!

I need a bit of help. One of my visiting birds, a blue heron, arrived today in my creek. Not sure why he's here IN THE WINTER? He only visits in the summer, he looks very cold and sick, he is huddled up, watery eyes and nose and looks old for a young bird, He's been coming around for 5 years so not sure how old he is, but he isn't OLD. He could barely fly and got himself stuck in a thorn bush, got him out and he flew off somewhere, I want to find him, he looked awful and I'd hate to see him die.
I'd make sure to keep him away from your birds Kendra. If you decide to help. Our Herons seem to stick around all winter at the river below but we don't get as cold as you. Sounds like this heron is sick and wild birds can give sickness to your flock. Which means your going to have to take off any clothes and shoes and wash up real good before going around your birds. Unless your birds were in the creek with him.

We had a few juvenile hawks terrorize us here last summer. There was a nest in the tree across the street, and they perch in my neighbor's dead pine too. Good to hear the Silkie chick is okay.

Thank you. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one, lol. The other benefit of a warmer winter is early hatching. The incubator had been running for 6 weeks solid. I really should stop, but.... I really want to hatch some of our duck eggs.

Oh I know that, I'd hate to lose any because of him.
