So I need some advise. We have renters five acres away nice people but they have cats and yesterday I was cleaning the coop when everyone became hysterical (only way to explain it) rooster was sounding the alarm my two “guard”geese scared worse than everyone else I just knew a hawk had flown in. But when I walked around to see what it was it was the neighbors big orange cat at the fence stalking my birds. I hollered and it ran but I got to thinking most of my chickens c are bantam do you think it would be brave enough to climb the fence an go after them? I told my dh I will carry the 22 out and shoot at it and try to scare it into another of its 9 lives I really don’t want to kill it but boy were my birds scared.

Good morning Patti. That's a tough one... I know a lot of folks who have cats and bantams without a problem. But this cat isn't part of the family. So watch and see what it does.

I know it’s been down here before I’ve seen it down around the barn. But that really freaked me out when I saw how scared everyone was and it was stalking. I will just see what happens my dh says we have rocks everywhere too but I was so scared it was a hawk didn’t even think of a rock or anything else. I guess if it had been a hawk I’d have grabbed it with my bare hands.

Patti, do your dogs get along with the birds? Maybe try getting them to pee around the perimeter if you can.

Something I find out yesterday (assuming it's true) is that chickens have a very poor sense of smell and predator pee does really effect them.

It might help deter the cat though.

This is just the kind of problem you should ask “Dear Ralphie”.

I am pretty sure he would not be as kind as you to the almost feral cat..

Cats that bother Dear Ralphie’s chickens are met with a quick demise Or a life trap and a slower demise...

Just remember the 3 “s”s when dealing with an animal some one owns.....or one the DNR protects...

Shoot silently and out of sight of others
Shovel a hole quickly and quietly out of sight
Shut up say nothing to anyone but Dear Ralphie about the cats demise..

Practice saying “the last I saw that cat he was going away”. Which is not a lie, as you saw him leaving this life for his heavenly judgement...
