Friends, we are completely heartbroken!
Our little bundle of joy died yesterday evening! 💔
We don't know why, the little one finally got it's act together, was happily chirping, eating, drinking and pooping the whole day. The weak leg was almost normal and the weight reached the 70 gram mark.
We both went outside to visit Viking and Violeta duck with her babies, then went into the garden to collect some dandelion for the grown-up's supper bowl. Buffzillitus was happily trailing me, investigating the spots where I had pulled out the dandelion plants but then suddenly fell on its back, peeped in distress and by the time I picked it up was cramping violently, dying in my hand in seconds. 😭
... need a break
So sorry:hugs

I'm very sorry to hear that :(

Loss of living creatures cuts deep. It's easier with bees because one has hundreds of thousands and can't really name them, but with ducks, cats, dogs... it's a blow to the heart.

To bring some positive news - our little Junior is now eating and drinking regularly from communal bowls and today I saw her hop into a basin of water on her own. So all the basic duck functions seem to be online now. Her legs are, well, not perfect, but definitely better.

Thank you again everybody for your support with Junior!

As for the older ducks, there were no eggs for two days and I was getting worried. Then I threw in more fluffy straw and also introduced better quality pelleted food that's really strong on protein and calcium ( https://www.huehner-shop.com/Gefluegelfutter-Huehner-Legekorn-25-Kilo ) . And boom -

My son and me were moving some sand and came across these... probably lizard eggs. From what I read we shouldn't have moved them - but then they already moved when the shovel reached them, we didn't know they were in the sand pile. There should be an old terrarium in the house with IR lighting. We'll see.

COOL! That would be really amazing to see hatch!

Greetings one and all.

Do the Americans get an extra-long weekend?

Babies are doing well this morning, One more hatched under my broody Buff, and three are pipped in the incubator so I'm tempted to switch them over to her.

I'd rather not have to raise ducklings myself, lol. Chicks are one thing, ducklings are so MESSY!!!
Some places in America are having an extra long weekend and others are business as usual and only the 4th off. We went out of state to see a concert yesterday. Were stuck in traffic for almost 2 hours. Saw a Truck with Ontario tags, going at a crawl so when we got next to it I put my husband's window down as I was driving and he montioned for him to put his window down. I yelled "Happy Canada Day" to him and he said Thank you and the same to you!! It was cute because he figured the only way I would know that is if I were a fellow Canadian. Only Me, lol.

I hatched out 13 baby snapping turtles years ago with an assisted hatch. Had my picture along with them on the front page of our town newspaper. Went to the library to get all the information, no internet back then. When hatch day came I actually peeled them out of the egg and they survived. Turned them all lose after the end of summer in a lake after feeding them all summer. It was a great experience. They were in a turtle we had caught to eat! Good luck with your lizard eggs!!!
