Rescued duckling concerns:
  • Please look at the picture of the ducklings navel below. Does that look inflamed? I have applied Terrormycin and triple antibiotic ointment, better safe than sorry...
It seems to be painful for the duckling when i touch its belly, especially the naval area.
  • It is still curling up into its fetal position when i put it down and it seems to have very weak legs, see video below.
I begin to believe that Tweedledee rejected the little one because it might be too weak to make it...

I feel ducked!

Rented a trailer from you howl over the weekend, to buy the winter-stash for the dux.

This is what 794Kg (1750 lbs) of duck-food looks like.

full

  • 10 bags of Layer Pellets
  • 10 bags of cracked corn
  • 5 bags of yellow corn
  • 5 bags of scratch grain
  • 3 bags of Wheat for fodder
  • 2 bags of crushed oyster shells
Everything can stay in the bags, but the Layer Pellets; those i have to fill into trash-cans so it wouldn't get moldy. All i have to buy now is the cat-food, can't store cat-food for more than a month, it goes rancid.

That's a lot of food :)

We hold about 100 kg but it's all in the house, crowding the stairs - need to get the garage upgraded, make a dividing wall, change the door so that mice won't get in (... so easily anyway) during autumn and winter.

As said, i have over 60 ducks now... they eat a lot currently and they will eat even more during the winter when there's less to forage outside. Did the math and the pellets will maybe last to the end of the year. 😖

The spare bedroom has become our storage room since it's hot I try to keep the feed cooler so it goes into the bedroom, If someone was to want to come stay I guess they'll have to sleep with the birds. :p
If someone wants to stay, put a hammock into the duck's house. I'm sure the ducks have a lot of stories to share. 🤣

It is always surprising what a good night's sleep and a few drops of vitamin solution does to a little duckling! - It woke me up at 4:30 this morning, peeping loudly and plunking on everything its bill could reach, so i gave it some drops of vitamin water with sugar and it went right back to sleep until 9:30.
Together we let the ducks out and after it drank some more drops of vitamins and sugar after which it performed its first ever poop, straight onto my t-shirt...
Right now its sleeping under my hand.

Are you putting antibiotic ointment on its belly?
Yes, did that three times since yesterday and its belly is looking much better.
The little one has started to like »belly rubs« and has pooped three times so far.
Drinking just a little bit, refuses to eat and sleeps a loooot! - Just like duckling #12 did after i dragged it out of the egg.
