Have you ever had a Mallard Runner Duck? I am sure the tiny one I bought last night is a Mallard and not a Rouen. I just wondered how big they get.

Never had a Mallard duckling myself, but there was a Momma Mallard raising her six babies in the duck yard here. Mallard ducklings are significantly smaller than domestic ducklings but they grow as fast as any duckling.
So if your Rouen is smaller than the other it likely be a Mallard...

Duckling Emergency:
This year has not been good for ducklings here...
So the little duckling that hatched yesterday jumped into the pot with my hot tea this morningand since then the webbies on its right foot have blistered up, so this is a second degree burn. The little one is undeterred by that, running around, eating drinking falling off the table, just what little ducklings do when they are one day old.
I read here and elsewhere about treatments and that there isn't too much that i can do other than keeping the foot as clean as possible and keep the duckling hydrated - no problem wit that. I have Triple Antibiotic Ointment (Bacitracin, Neomycin, Polymycin), Antibiotic Cream with pain relief (Neomycin, Polymyxin + Pramoxine) as well as Terramycin.
I am planning to use all of this one after the other on the foot to prevent any kind of infection.
I also have Doxycycline tablets, would it be a good idea to give some of that to the duckling mixed with the food?
Any idea how i can reduce the swelling and the pressure in those blisters? I don't want them to burst for as long as possible to reduce the risk for infection.
I have Epsom salt, would bathing the foot in a concentrated Epsom salt solution draw liquid out of these blisters?

Don't use anything with pain reliever in it Frank. I don't know why for sure but everyone on here always says to use neosporin without pain reliever. I am so sorry this happened. They can jump so high and seem to be highly addicted to liquids. I pray that it gets alright. Too bad you could not put the medicine on it and then wrap it in gauze to keep it clean for a few days. I would think that the blisters would subside by themselves.

I am not sure about the Epsom salt but if you do decide to do that I know you know not to let it drink any of it. It probably wouldn't hurt but the salt may burn, I just am not sure. So sorry this happened.

Yes I do have Mallard ducks myself that are domesticated. One Hen is somewhat bigger than my smaller one. I just saw where you had posted about Mallards on here and thought you might have had one yourself. Mine only has the one dark eye stripe and the other stripe is quite fainter. Thank though

Careful that you won't keep the little ones long enough in the house to become really stinky...
The incubator gang still insists in spending the night in my living room.
This morning they broke out of their make-shift pen and prepared a nice breakfast for me!

No, they didn't... They walked to my bedroom door and knocked to wake me up.
And they pooped on the floor all along the way...

I have had them in the house for as long as 6 weeks before and you are right, it is a full time job to keep them clean. I am going to keep these little guys in longer than the three weeks that I put the others out but if it gets to be too much I have a pen worked out that a coon could not get into even if it tried. That is where they will go. I was just too trusting since I had never had that ever happen on over the 3 years I have had them here and felt very safe about it. I will check all of my traps in the morning and see what happens. Sorry about your poopy floor. I could never do more than 2 at a time in the house but I did have 3 once, lol.

I have used Lidocain on grown-up ducks in the past without any problems, but you are correct, that is a one day old duckling…
Anyways, i have to choose between two equally bad looking alternatives:

1. No pain medication and risking that the little one pecks or tears open those blisters, which increase the likeliness of an inflammation of the whole foot
2. Use pain medication and the duckling leaves those blisters alone

Without the pain-medication the duckling is definitely in pain and is permanently pecking and scratching on those blisters. With the pain medication it is calm and sleepy...
There is the thread »Fact or Fiction? "Caine" and Poultry« here at BYC where @casportpony did some research about pain medications and poultry. Very similar to the myth of »do not feed medicated chick-starter to ducklings«.
The pain medication used in the CVS brand of Antibioticn Cream + Painkiller is Pramoxine.
