Hi, we are first time duck owners and decided to try and hatch some ducklings, black Swedish. We only had 4 viable out of the initial 12, one soon died in the shell, and then when it was 3-4 days after hatch day should have happened we gave up on the other three. A few days later we went to dispose of the three eggs, when we heard one peeping and saw a small external pip! This was at about Wednesday 6:30am, day 36.

We read everything online, which said 12-48 hours for it to zip, but nothing happened. Today, over 48 hours from when we found the pip, around noon, we assisted a bit as we thought we were supposed to. The duckling managed to get itself mostly out of the shell. It was very active and peeped a lot. We could see no blood vessels etc. so around 3/4pm we helped break the shell a bit around the edge, and the duckling pushed right out but we saw there was a yolk sac still attached!!

We quickly put her back in the incubator, made sure humidity was up, and made sure the sac was damp. We left her for a few hours, came back around 8pm and she had burst the sac. Yolk everywhere, very minimal blood. The sac is still attached. We tried to give her some sugar water, and wrap her in a damp towel, but she's so active we're scared she's going to hurt herself... Right now she's in the incubator, wrapped in a damp towel, and somewhat settled. Please help, we're freaking out and don't know what to do next or if what we're doing is right. I read somewhere something about cutting it off/clamping etc. but we really don't know what to do, and we really don't want her to be in pain. HELP!

I see this is from yesterday, but how is the duckling doing today? Some people will put them in a cup so they can't run around and tear any blood vessels.

Today she's very activestill! The sac seems to have dried up a good amount though, and we're trying to keep the incubator warm and humid. We're also trying to feed her sugar water and some mushy/watery food.

We're just worried that she looks good but will deteriorate (hopefully not :fl)

What should happen to the sac typically? Will it fall off or...?

That sounds promising!! :fl

It should get absorbed into her abdomen. Do you have pictures of her current situation? Someone might have advice on how to help better than me and pictures always help. 🙂

I do! If anyone can help, that would be much appreciated...
We're also a bit worried about it's eyes, as they seem a bit off, but we read on another forum that bathing them gently with a wet/damp q-tip could help?

This is her yolk sac/umbilical cord, which she seems to be trying to pick at which worries us, as well as her eyes and her general small cuteness.
