Polish

Pros: These birds are beauties!
Cons: Can't see very well, unintelligent
I purchased four buff laced polish from Cackle Hatchery. Let me say, I loved these birds. They are very unusual with their slate colored legs and top knot. They lay pretty well, about three to four eggs a week, but as chickens they need special care because they can't see well and can easily get lost. The hens are sweet but the males are very energetic and high strung. The breed usually gets bullied.
I would not recommend this breed to anyone just starting out with chickens. This is not a beginners breed.

Overall, a delightful breed!

Pros: Adjustable so if the chicks are too hot or cold you can move it.
Cons: Sometimes the bulb burns out.
This brooder is great! Keeps chicks warm and if they're too hot it you can clamp it higher up. However, it doesn't have a good guard so if the chicks get flighty, they can jump into the hot bulb. Yikes! Another thing that freaks me out is that if I have to go to the store, there is a chance that the bulb will burn out. I check the chicks before I go to bed, but once or twice the bulb has burnt out in the middle of the night and I awake to chilled chicks. Let me say that this problem is with the LIGHTBULB, not the brooder. Any single bulbed brooder like this is going to have the risk of bulbs going out. Still, it worries me. I always feel uncomfortable using these. Overall, though, it is a good brooder.
Pros: Holds a lot of food so if you're gone all day the chicks will have plenty of food.
Cons: Chicks constantly perch and poop on it. The bottom base gets full of poop and a lot of food gets wasted.
I like the bright colors of the bases and the large amount of food the feeder holds. BUT, every time I check on the chicks, one is perching on it and pooping on it, and it's not pleasant to fill the feeder up when it's covered in chicken turds, if you know what I mean..... Also they knock each other off of it and I'm afraid one will get hurt. I have yet to find the perfect feeder....

Pros: holds a good amount of food.
Cons: It easily gets full of bedding and poop and is a pain to clean out.
This feeder does the job well enough. I just don't enjoy cleaning it out when the chicks scratch bedding in it. Even adult birds kick up dirt into it, and they have trouble getting out all the food. A lot gets wasted, and that irks me when they waste food. Also it is easily tipped over. On the bright side it is metal and lasts forever.

Keeping Chickens

Pros: Everything a beginner needs to know!
Cons: Very little on showing chickens
This book tells you everything you need to know about starting your flock! Tells you how to raise chicks and hatch them on your own, to even keeping a crowing cockerel quite! Gives you hints on a good coop and on winterizing your flock. A must have.

Pros: Cleans the lice out
Cons: Needs a few applications to kill all the lice
This stuff is good for getting rid of lice. It is a white powder, and if you're not careful, you can breathe it in. As far as I know, it doesn't hurt the chickens. You need to apply it to the birds a few days in a row, though.

Pros: the chickens don't mind it in their water
Cons: It's really hard to figure out how much each bird needs.
This is good wormer. It doesn't go bad quickly, and it really cleans out the worms. I've noticed that the lid leaks.

Wyandotte

Pros: Sweet, easy going, quiet.
Cons: Not a golden comet layer
Oh my goodness. Where to start. Where to start. Okay, so I have two red laced blue Wyandottes, and, lemme say, these are WONDERFUL chickens. Mine are so cute and fluffy, and very nice to look at. They are pretty even tempered, and are the flock bosses. It might help to say that they are the oldest it my flock, Which is probably why they're the flock bosses. They are pretty good layers, but mine don't always lay in the winter ( what bird does? ). Their eggs are medium sized and are brown. These are the best winter birds. They don't have the problem of their combs freezing off because theirs are small and lay tightly against the head. Their feathers keep them wonderfully warm, and the girls are good free rangers. I hope I helped you!
Pros: Hangs off the ground, so it stays pretty clean
Cons: when the food is low it doesn't come out of the feeeder
A good, tough feeder. Lasts forever. My chickens love to perch on things, and even they can't manage to climb onto this feeder! It holds a nice amount of food, so you don't have to fill it up every day.
Somehow, though, my birds manage to scratch hay into it, and you have to take it apart to remove all of it.
Pros: They get attatched to their caretakers.
Cons: Can be over protective.....

I got two embden goslings and, let me say, I adored those guys. Actually, they were supposed to be Toulouse geese, but the hatchery gave us the wrong ones. But we found that out too late. Anyway, they grew fast, and were wonderful grazers, grazing on our huge yard all day, not needing much grain. Those geese would follow me everywhere (i babied them too much when they were goslings) , and when I came outside they would honk and fly over to me. After they got older, they started getting aggressive to my family, hissing and snapping when they came outside. They couldn't come out of the house without looking over their shoulder to make sure Phil and Si weren't sneaking up on them. I was the only one safe to go out. Unfortunutely, I wasn't safe after a while, for the ganders (yes, they both turned out to be ganders) decided I wasn't their friend anymore. They would hiss and snap at me as well. And so they were put in the cooking pot. Overall, not a good idea to have ganders.
Pros: Beautiful plumage, great free rangers, and friendly.
Cons: Mine don't like being handled.
These birds are WONDERFUL. They look so pretty as they forage in my yard. Every time I go outside they run up to me, seeing if I have anything for them. Most of them are quite talkative, a couple are quiet. My rooster is very docile. The only thing these birds don't like is being picked up. Sometimes they flap and sqwack, but the relax after a few seconds. These make a wonderful addition to anyone's flock. The birds are good layers as well.
Pros: Gentle, docile, a good layer. A good free range bird.
Cons: Single comb is prone to frostbite. The docile breed may be bullied.
I have two hatchery Jersey Giants. They are black. My birds aren't as big as they are supposed to be, and that is because hatchery strains are usually poor in size. However, my girls are sweet and gentle, always coming up to me to see what's going on. Their eggs are large and brown. My girls have never been broody. This is a great bird for beginners. There's only one problem: if you live in a place with cold winters, there is the danger of their combs getting frozen. Other than that, they do well in winter.
