I found an egg on the coop floor this morning with a cracked shell. The liner on the inside was not punctured, therefore, the inside was contained and not leaking. Is the egg still good if cooked for breakfast tomorrow morning?
Also, one of my chickens layed a completely shell-less egg this...
My hens have all started laying now. I'm averaging 7 eggs per day from 9 hens. The heat here in Oklahoma has diminished and we are now getting some low night temps in the 50's and high day temps in the 80's & 90's.
At what point will they slack off for the winter? I know I may still get an egg...
I finally have all 9 of my hens laying now. I have (3) nest boxes built in to the side wall of my coop.
I have read, and still believe, that most hens want to lay in the same nest box, although all 3 of my nest boxes are getting used daily. As 3 of the hens are sitting, the others are either...
I just want to share some quick and exciting facts and offer some encouragement pertaining to the long, tiresome, and frustrating wait for your first eggs from your young flocks.
I have 9 young hens consisting of Black Australorp, RIR, and one Buff O.
In the first 18 days since my first egg, I...
I have one out of nine chickens that has started laying....inconsistent, but laying. They are all 19 weeks old. Black Australorps, RIR's, and a lone Buff O.
My question is, once the Oklahoma heat subsides, (114° for wednesday) and we start the downward side of the heat, and they stop panting so...
My first egg arrived on Thursday......no egg on Friday.....then today, my son and I watched one of our RIR's climb in to the milk crate nest I put in the run, left her alone for a while, then I sent my sone back out about 30 minutes later to check and sure enough......the second egg!
It's just...
Ok, I know most will tell me to give it time, but for weeks now, I've been preparing the nest boxes with bedding, and putting golf balls in them, and just messing with the nests after my chickens jump up on the roost, so they see me messing around in there.
I got my first egg yesterday, and it...
I posted yesterday about one of my hens submitting to me by squating......I come home from work today and find in the corner of the run............an egg about the size of a teaspooon!!!!!! Pretty cool feeling.
Just thought I'd share.
The title sounds rather disgusting, huh???
One of my 9 hens froze and squated for me yesterday evening. I've never witnessed it before since I'm only in my 18th week of chicken keeping. But after reading up on the forum here for several weeks now, I immediately knew what was going on.
When I got...
My flock just turned 16 weeks old today. They are on their final 2-3 days of starter/grower.
Do I absolutely need to buy another 25# bag of starter/grower, or can I get my 50# bag of layer, and not provide oyster shell until they mature a little more?
I have not seen any eggs yet from them...
Ok...someone please explain the "Egg Song" to me. I believe I know how it sounds, as when I was a kid, I would hear grandma's chickens hollering from the coop and her telling me that one had just laid an egg. Do they make this sound for other reasons too???
I have (9) 15 week old RIR's, BA's...
I know chickens are messy, and walk around in their own stink, but I hate to just throw leftover corn cobs or watermellon rhinds into the run, allowing them to get covered in dirt before they have a chance to eat it.
I took a long wood screw, (about 3 1/2") and drilled it through one of the...
I have (5) BA's that are all 12 weeks. Since they have been fully feathered, (2) of them are feathered differently. Each of the feathers on these 2 are all frayed out, and look like they have had a perm. (almost like they have curly hair) They have all the features of a pure BA, including the...
I spent a couple hours rearranging the roost for my (9) 11 week old pullets. My coop is 4' x 8'. The roost was above the pop door, spanning accross one of the 4' ends. The birds are getting big, but were able to still sit on the 4' long roost.
Today, I lowered it, and mounted it on one of the...
I'm at a loss on getting my Squash Bug (not stink bug) problem under control in my garden. I haven't lost any plants in the garden yet, but I know I will eventually. My garden is not fenced, and I only let the chickens out while I'm out to watch them in the evenings.
They haven't really...
I probably posted this in the wrong forum, so I thought I'd try it over here.
I had an owl decoy sitting in the middle of my garden. My chicks (9 weeks old) have not discovered the garden yet. I moved my owl decoy to the end of my garden, which is in the direction of where my chicks would come...
I had an owl decoy sitting in the middle of my garden. My chicks (9 weeks old) have not discovered the garden yet. I moved my owl decoy to the end of my garden, which is in the direction of where my chicks would come from once they do figure out I have a garden. Has anyone had any luck with a...
I took a pair of shears and trimmed back my Black Australorps top beak. She has major cross beak. Her top was curled down so far, it started to look like a hawks beak. It bled a little bit and I felt pretty bad. The other chickens immediately jumped all over her and started harrasing her. I had...
Just wanted to share some of my wednesday evening events.
I went ahead and put a new roost all the way up as high as I could put it while my chickens were out in the yard. It's a 1x4 piece of pine wood sitting on 2 shelf brackets. It works great now, but as they grow, I'll probably have to...
