    new broody hatching eggs

I just got 5 fertile eggs to put under my newly broody hen. A couple of questions: Can I move her to a bigger, separate area? Will she be ok all alone in a private apartment/run? It's only been a few days and my nest box is very small, though she seems very comfortable. Just thinking...

    need a few hatching eggs

I have a small (5) flock of laying hens. They are 1 year this month and one has just suddenly gone broody. I have no rooster and think I'd like to put some fertilized eggs under her. No preference on breed, but would like a white egg since I don't have any. I'll take any kind of fertilized...

    Puppy with Chickens!

If I weren't so technically challenged I'd post the cutest video of my new puppy playing FETCH with chickens! I'm so thrilled that Willow (3 mo old pup) is getting along with my flock of 5 hens! Chickens have never been out of their run, but since I put up a fence (mainly for the puppy) I can...

40 weeks old - no egg yet

I guess it's a winter time thing... but blue ameracauna STILL hasn't laid an egg at 40 weeks. Olive egger laid at 23 weeks. All the others are laying daily. What the heck? Is this normal? Will I have to wait until spring?

found one hen dead this a.m. - mysterious?

Have a flock of 6 laying hens - about 30 weeks old. They have been fine, no sign of illness. Last nite apparently, inside the run (I keep coop door cracked open) and run is totally enclosed including roof--no sign of any predator entry at all-- my silver laced Wyandotte was found early this...

BLue Ameracauna hasn't laid! 29 weeks now

My six are all same age (29 weeks now) First one (red sex link) laid at 18 weeks! Easter egger laid an olive egg at 23 weeks.... all breeds have laid prior to 23 weeks except my blue ameracauna. WHEN will she lay? I now have a dark brown egg, light brown, 2 light pink, a green -- I want a...

    oyster shell supplement

Well, my hens have been laying for a little over 3 months. Their eggshells have been really super hard all along. I realized that their layer feed contains extra calcium, so wonder if I even need to provide oyster shell? Their bin ran out so I waited a few days before re-filling (found a...

Welsummer STILL hasn't laid at 30 weeks

The rest of the flock has been laying a while. She's the hold out. What is wrong with her? Healthy, happy, talkative.... she just hasn't laid. She's in the middle of pecking order

    My hens don't squat?

It's odd, but none of my pullets squat. 3 of the 5 are laying (at 29 weeks) but have never squatted. They've had a rooster around but he's gone now. Wondering if that's why? Maybe they will now? They are all pretty skittish around people. They come running for treats but if I try to pick...

three out of five laying finally!

Now have 3 laying. Red sex-link laid at 24 weeks and golden laced Wyandotte at 25 weeks. FINALLY, at 30 weeks, barred rock gave us an egg (pale and kinda speckled). Still waiting on my welsummer and easter egger! It's like having an easter egg hunt every day! These are my first chickens...

So proud of my laying hens

So, I posted at Christmas time that my first hen (Lucy, red sex link at 24 weeks) laid, and she has given us an egg each day since. HUGE eggs--yesterday it was bigger than a jumbo. I'm shocked at how perfect and hard the shells are, as she hadn't had any calcium supplement and was still on...

First eggs! at 23 weeks dead of winter!!

SO excited -- BEST Christmas present ever! On Dec 23, very unexpectedly found first egg. 5 hens, all 23 weeks, different breeds. I suspected it was the red sex link and confirmed this a.m. She had just laid and was still in the nest box when we opened it this morning. Still warm and...

    Sexing silkies?

I'm planning to order some silkies (first time) for spring hatch. MPC offers sexing, but I know they come from Myer hatchery--which states they only offer them straight run. I've heard that sexing them is next to impossible--but I REALLY only want pullets. Should I just chance it and order...

Will young hens lay first eggs in winter?

I have 5 hens--different breeds -- 16 weeks old. Some have very red face/combs but not squatting yet. Since it is coming on winter (in Georgia) and now pretty cold and dark earlier, can I expect a first egg sometime in the next couple months or is it likely to be in the spring? No artificial...

Could my 11 week roo be crowing??

Neighbor let me know that my rooster (BO - 11 weeks) crowed this a.m. Can they really crow this young?

Roosting spots inside the coop - pecking order?

Just curious about the reason for this change: My 7 week old flock (5 pullets, one roo) have been roosting in the same spot -- on 1 roost pole about 5 feet long -- all together in a tiny area at the backside of the coop, nearly piled up on one another. But suddenly--in the last week, my EE...

My only Buff Orpington is a roo I fear.....

I am very new to chickens but I believe I have 1 roo out of my flock of 6 chicks (that were ordered as sexed pullets). My only BO, sadly, because I can't keep a rooster. She/he has been the most outgoing, bossy one from almost day one. She is 5-1/2 weeks old in these pics (if I can figure out...

    Sleeping on the roost

Out of the brooder and in the coop for two nites now (4.5 weeks old). Not sure about the first night, but the second night they slept all together on their roost--which is about 3 feet high. Of course, it is 6 feet long and they only used 1 foot of space (six of them smooshed together). I...

Hi all! After reading all your posts for more than a month.... I decided to join you in (virtual) p

I am ADDICTED (to this website) and to everything chicken! My six babies just went into their big house this weekend (I'm looking all over for baby monitors now --but no electricity in the coop--yet) Not planning for power, but I'm as worried about them all alone at night as I was with my (now...
