I feel for you and your chickens.
Over here on the west side of the country where we normally have snow by the foot this time of the year we are having an early spring. Mama hen is suddenly wanting to lay anywhere except the nest boxes.
Love the olive green its beautiful.
A few of the signs I've noticed over the years that help me figure out which hen is laying. I'm sure i have missed a few. Not all hens show these signs or even part of the signs.
After a hen starts laying they will eat more. Sometimes its seems they are...
Congratulations you will just love how well she lays. Red sex-links are great layers mine started laying 8 days ago and she has laid 7 eggs so far. Still waiting for today's egg.
My flocks first Egg 1.8 oz or 52 g, a medium. With a nice strong shell.
By Mycroft at 22 weeks 5 days. She is my red sex-link.
She laid the egg in the box i have been storing grass in by the back door instead of in the nest boxes. I only looked in there today because when I added a...
The yellow color is just the chicks first fuzz. When the first real feathers come in they won't be yellow. My red sex-link was yellow as a chick and it soon started getting red feathers. If the leghorns are white ones they may start out yellow too.
Don't worry a little blood on the eggshell happens every once in a while no matter the age of the chicken. You did the right thing rinsing the egg off. The hen probably didn't even notice the little bleeder and will heal and be fine in no time.
Mine are 20 weeks and i was so happy to see them checking out the nest boxes last week. I started checking the nest boxes twice a day, hoping. But it turned out a couple of the younger hens has started sleeping in the nest boxes. So far i haven't figured out how to break them of it and still...
I believe Sandywitch was talking about how long it takes to fully form a egg, from a one cell size yolk all the way up to a large ready to lay egg, takes around a month. Apposed to the time between laid eggs which takes around 26 hours.
Egg yolks form very slowly and there can be a months...
We called them Mini-peewee's at the Hatchery. But i don't believe its an official name just something the boss came up with. We would sell them fresh by the pound in boxes. Some of them were as small as large pea size, crafters would buy them. They would or could eat the eggs but most of them...
Oh no! i deliberately didn't include the cost of my coop or the feeders. I didn't keep track. More like didn't want to know. And i have no idea how to figure in the cost or the power for the lights and water heater. And as all old farmers know all natural fertilizer is free but for the...
Yes it is, I thought i was just extra super nuts. Sure glad someone is doing even a little bit of the statistician stuff. For a while designed huge complicated spreadsheets for a living and the spreadsheet just seemed to acquire a life of it's own.
I would paste my spreadsheet in to be...
