I am getting one marans egg a day - from the one on meds, so I can't even cook it up for us to eat! She gets it.... didn't realize they had such a strong instinct to brood- but it could come in handy for chicken addicts.

Marans hens = contagious broody syndrome. Just saying.... 5 out of 6 have gone broody this spring. The sixth hen has been away from the other five recovering from bumblefoot, so she has not been influenced by it..... she may live in the garage forever lol

Hi Everyone Looks to me like many of you are hatching. I won't be doing any hatching here for awhile. At least not pure marans. We rehomed our blue copper cockerel Cowboy this past week. He was damaging the hens just too much- as well as having a high tail and a high strung attitude like a...

Hi everyone. Looks like I have about 150 posts to catch up on. Looks like I may be taking advantage of my broody black copper hen. We had a successful hawk attack (my first successful predator attack) and we lost my only blue splash hen. She was such a good bird... laid a beautiful egg almost...

Morning everyone Been a while since I have been on here. The birds have been keeping us busy this winter. The littles are all grown up now and the young rooster has inally learned he is a boy. Had some hens get really bad cuts on their backsides due to the roosters nails. Not impressed at...

I love the solid blues too- very pretty. I do like the blue coppers when the contrast color is darker, more red then gold. My blue copper roo is still on the gold side of color- but he certainly is an eye catcher. I would love a to follow along with this topic- thanks Don!

East coaster here.... battling the flu I believe, as well as my little one who is almost 2 years old. No fun at all..... on a better note, lots of the ladies are laying eggs these days. We introduce people to our marans eggs and they just can't believe it. One guy said last night " I'm not...

I do believe one of my washingstons (aka pink's chicks) are laying now! We had an extra marans egg in the coop yesterday. Going to do the chicken shuffle to see which little one it is! Not a bad color either- darker then the others just slightly and the same size- meaning her first eggs were not...

Freezing here in MA..... the birds are all shivering today. Feeling terrible for them... it was -6 this morning and barely made it to 16 degrees today. No sun on the coop or runs. They are not liking it one bit. And not only is my mix roo still having seizure like episodes (slowly seems to be...
