We see this in Orps who have weak feather quality. Watch , and see how his mature feathers grow in.

Breeding FULL siblings to one another is just a re-scrambling of existing genes. Breeding HALF siblings increases the influence of the common parent.

Keep your babies on medicated feed until 4 1/2 months old. A creep feeder that they can go into, but the older birds can't, is easy to make. Med. feed will NOT hurt your adult birds though. Mine steal it all the time.

I'd leave off the sod in that small qan area. The birds will kill it in a week.Once they are used to their coop, perhaps you can let them out to graze when you can watch them.

That poor hen needs a hen saddle ! All my big Buff Orp girls wear one to prevent cock birds from gaffing them.Lots of people on BYC make them. The ones with sliding elastic stay on the best. It is actually the cock bird's toenails that do the damage. A pedicure would prevent some of that too.Cut...

It can also be caused in birds by an iodine deficiency. A friend had a yellow crowned Panama parrot she had raised from a chick. He was supposed to be green , and yellow. She moved to GA. from the coast of FLA, and the poor bird turned red, purple, orange, and very little green, when I first saw...

The Hawks and eagles are a real problem here in late summer, and fall. They are pairing, and migrating.Young Bald Eagles, Goldens, and Red Tails everywhere. In the Spring and summer, my crows run them off, but not in the fall after their babies are raised, and flying with the murders. This has...

Any vet can do a fecal flotation. I do my own every 2 months. Here in the South, parasites are a recurring problem. All the northern birds fly in for the winter, bringing us a new load of parasites, and we don't get the killing cold to knock those bugs out. If your birds free range here, you...

My central pole is 12 feet tall. The lines are attached to it and to my 8' tall fences. Plenty of room for a truck.

Dee, Take a look at my page, and see the monofilament lines I use for Hawk protection. These are 40 lb. test lines that cover about 1/2 acre.Leaves , snow, and ice do not foul these lines. They have done a great job for me. All my hydrangea bushes in the orchard under those lines have bird...

They are both by the same cock bird, Monty. bred to an English hen, and a SOP hen.The English/ Cochin infused blood does a great job of obliterating the Rock characteristics added to Orps. You ought to feel the keels on these girls. They were just 5 months old in these photos. The 1/2 English...

Don't get carried away by colors until you know how to breed type in a Black Lorp. When you have a flock of good blacks, then you can try breeding the colors. The Blues are not set in type yet, and are much harder to breed for a novice. Walk before you run.......There is much to learn about type.
