Carbon monoxide isn’t going to be a viable solution for most of us. It’s just too toxic. How would one do it without suffusing the gas into the general air space? Very dangerous, but maybe there’s an easy, safe way to use it that I’m not aware of.
You can use scissors or a good quality, sharp set of rose clippers. Or you can suffocate the chick in a ziplock or with some Saran Wrap. You could drown it in a bucket or sink. Seems to me the most humane thing would be a sharp edge, but if you can’t do that, there are other ways. If you’re going to care for animals, you’re going to have to deal with this sort of thing. I’m very sorry it’s happened to you so early. It really hurts... yet it is your responsibility to give the animal the best care you can give it. Tonight, that care is to provide a quick, relatively painless exit from a world it is not equipped to survive in.
