I will say that my mature OEG bantams in the side pasture don't make much noise at all. The roo wakes up and starts crowing around 6:45 every morning, and then crows every night when the sun is going down. Other than that, he doesn't make any noise at all unless there's something he doesn't like too close to the pasture fencing, or unless it's getting ready to rain. I did catch my Jersey Giant roo, Frisch's, attempting to crow yesterday - he sounded like an antique car horn!

One of mine tried to crow yesterday I think. It was an aweful screeching noise. I couldnt figure out who did it and it hasn't happened again. They are very beautiful little chicks! I so wish I could keep them.

Jeanne Marie and all,

I always wondered how anyone could take a rooster anywhere near their home. My lone experience was the mystery rooster owned by an unknown neighbor, and that thing started crowing - a real loud cock-a-doodle-do, anytime after 3am. I had to get up at 5 to get the train to NYC, and that experience made me dislike all roosters.

But, thanks to you and others, I am learning that all roosters are not obsessively loud crowers starting hours before dawn.

My six chickies arrived today. All seemed healthy, but now I see that the runt - the little Polish, seems like she is not thriving. She is tiny compared to the others. So, I followed all the instructions for feeding, etc, and I will hope for the best.

One other chick has some sort of dried schmutz on her neck. I examined the area, and there does not seem to be any problem with the skin - no redness or open sores, etc. Does anyone think I should leave it alone, or try to wash it off?

Thanks in advance. Oh, my 13yo son LOVES them. At the beginning when I told him I was going to get some chickens, he wanted no part of it. But I've been talking it up for months, and now that they are here.....well he actually squealed when he first saw them. He is a sport kid - not a squealer! And he got to name the first one - the buff orpington. He named her Carmelo - after Carmelo Anthony. So there you go. Day one of chicks is over. We did ok, I think!

I'd wash the goop off her neck and get her as dry as you can before putting her back under the lamp. May just be dried droppings from shipping. I had a few in my shipment that had dried poo on them, and even though it didn't look like poo, it sure smelled like it when I got it damp to clean it off.

Just keep an eye on their little vent areas for poopy butt/pasting-up issues, and treat accordingly. A neighbor got some chicks yesterday to raise - blue Andalusians (and yes, I squeeeeeeee'd when I saw them!) - and I told her to start them out on natural apple cider vinegar like Bragg's for a good start on a healthy digestive system, and to use a little bit of probiotic powder in their chick starter. It seems the more I've read of people doing this for their shipped chicks right off the bat, the less instances I've read of pasting-up happening. If it does, it seems to be minimal and cleared up in a day's time.

I hope your little Polish pulls through!

If you can't find anyone to re-home your roos, I'll take them. Most of my roos are either Australorp or Jersey Giant, and they're mean as the dickens...but my Buff Orp roo, Duke - he's my sweetie! Comes running to me every day and clucks back at me when I talk to him. He HAS to be on my lap if I'm in the pasture. You're in AL, and I'm in KY, so I'm close enough to be able to meet you halfway when the time comes to re-home if you can't find anyone closer to take them and give them a good home.

**Edited to add: All but one of each of the Aussie/Giant roos will become dinner - the rest will be for breeding purposes. But the Buffs make excellent pets and flock watchers from everyone else I've read about having them. I'd rather have nice flock watchers than nasty-natured ones that want to attack the hand that feeds!

Dear All,
I am new to BYC and owning chickens! Our new girls (hopefully girls ;)) arrived last Tuesday, April 23rd. Upon arrival, 2 did not look good at all. We quickly brought their core temperature up under a heat lamp, gave them water through an eye dropper and separated them from the group. Within an hour they perked up. The smaller one of the 2 needed a bit more TLC and she received a vitamin/electrolyte solution, every hour for a total of 5 doses. By the evening they were back with the group. I awoke the next morning to the lil girl motoring around the brooder, eating and drinking water on her own. It's been 10 days, and they are all doing fantastic! I have learned sooooo much about chick behavior. I will post some pics, Good luck everyone.
Cheers,
Susan from NY
