Mine like to be petted but not so much being picked up. But my top roo will sleep in my lap if I do pick him up.

Hi eyotig25!

My babies are great but they smell way worse than the last ones did. We moved them to the deck the other night. Who knew a large wooden shipping crate would make such a nice brooder...lol

I'm not sure I can help with the sexing but please post pictures of whole body from the side and a pic of the combs.

Sorry. I had to go back a page to see your pics. They all look like pullets to me but I'm not real familiar with that breed. Its still a little early to tell. With my buffs the roos get combs first. My pullets have little to no combs and they are not pink or red. Also my roos start getting wattle bumps at about 6 weeks that are looking pretty pink. My pullets wattles stay flesh colored. At twelve weeks my pullet is just starting to get some pink in her wattle and comb area. She will be close to laying in about 6 more weeks.

New to the group and have chicks arriving on Tuesday. I'm wondering if any of you use sand in your brooders or whether this is a bad material for chicks? I'm trying to figure out what is going to be the best material for cleaning and keeping the smell down while they are in the house. Any suggestions? Leesa

Hi Leesa! I'm new too, my first chicks are just 3 weeks old today. I used just paper towels for the first week, then added some pine chips to the paper towels for the second week and for the last week I've just been using chips. As a first time mom I was cleaning nightly for the first two weeks so the paper towels were easiest for that. I just have 4 chicks.

hello hanshens and sw0wwhite...welcome to byc.... .....hanshens please do not use sand in your brooder....I read somewhere on this site in a brooder thread that sand will deform the chicks feet it is ok when they get bigger but not now...we used newspaper on the bottom and soft pine shavings...with them being so little they where pretty easy to clean up after, it is just as they got older it required a little more effort....but it worked for us....we love to see pictures so if you can post them we'd love to oh and ah
