I did it and now to see if they are not too pea brained to recognize their feeder down there at the bottom of the ramp. I'm hoping they are "smart" for chickens. I also put their water in plain view. I will hang the feeder under the coop in a few days or sooner. I also am purchasing a larger water container. They sure do drink a lot of water! thxs again for the suggestion.

HELP!!! I've got one chick that I noticed had poop caked around the vent so I pulled her out and cleaned it off with a warm wet q-tip. But there is also a mass of tissue there that looks like (umbilical cord???) It's a black mass that was clearly part of her body so I left it and placed her back into the brooder. Except, as soon as she went in the other chicks started pecking at it to get it off of her and were succeeding causing it to open and bleed. Sorry for the graphic pics, but does and one know what this is and what I should do? Currently, she is in a smaller box in the brooder separated from the other chicks. Any advice?

It looks like the umbilical cord. The wet matted feathers made it to where the other chicks can see it. I would keep it seperated untilcompletely dry and make sure its no longer bleeding..

She is dry now and the fluff definitely covers more...unfortunately she hopped out of the box and another chick pulled the majority of it off. Open wound...uuggh I did not think she would be able to clear the side of the box. The others seem to be leaving her alone now but there is still a little of it left. I sprayed the wound with Blu-kote (I didn't realize it was actually blue though...to my huge surprise.) Now she has blue butt.

Do you think the rest will dry up and fall off or can they cause problems (like babies and belly hernias??)

I would just watch it closely for signs of bleeding and infection. It should heal on its own as long as there is no new injury. Also watch for pecking from the other chicks.

Quote: Thanks so much for the advise. Little blue butt seems fine today. No one pecking at the remainder of the umbilical cord now that it is disguised in all that blue

I'll keep checking her for bleeding or infection.

Hanshens, I had one like that, but I thought that was a poopy butt (first chicks, first one I saw), until it started to look red, then I stopped, it fell off after about 3-4 days, the others would occasionally pick at it, but she would peck right back.

Yesterday, my coop got a bit over heAted, over 90 F ambient, my chicks are just over a week old, I unplugged the heat light, as we are looking at some 30 degree Celsius days coming up, they seem happiest at 70-75F, always have, any warmer, and even at a day old they would avoid the light. So their skin was showing through very red, where they are getting their feathers in, and the bigger ones were panting last night. This morning they were still rather red looking, I thought it was a heat response, now I'm confused, it's most prominent on my big meaties, I was going to go visit DH camping tonight, but I'm thinking its going to need to be a day trip, as I'm a little worried about these guys and the heat, I'd like to get them outside tomorrow once it gets warm in the coop.
