Very cute Heby. mine are 1 1/2 weeks. They are starting to know there is a world out there as they stretch their heads up to look out of the brooder. Lol. They get testy with each other. Is that normal? I have 11. I just have them on crumble. Nothing else. Should i let them venture outdoors soon in a little dog run? Maybe they are getting bored?

I have a clock in there which they enjoy. I think the ticking is soothing for them.

Very cute. I'm not sure about letting them go out. Guess it depends on your situation. I don't really have a run for them to play in so I have to keep mine indoors for now until I finish their coop and run. If they do go out and eat on grass and such, make sure they have access to sand or grit to eat to breakdown the food. Make sure they have enough room in brooder & maybe they are just trying to establish a pecking order already?? I haven't noticed my older chicks picking on each other but these new babies to seem to bow up at each other and try to hop on each other. haha

Heby, they may be running out of room. I built a 4x4 brooder box out of clearance sale plywood pieces at Lowe's for less than $23. Look around your local home improvement stores and see if you can find some of what I lucked into - our brooder is sturdy and will last a looooooong time with plenty of room for up to 35-ish full-size fowl chicks to make it to the 6 week mark. ;-)

If you have a dog kennel, that works awesome as a temporary outdoor safe-space - just take the tray out of the bottom so the grass comes through, give them a bowl of chick grit, and let the games begin! They love warm days and fresh treats even as young as a week old.

I have them in a fairly large size tote for the moment. There's 8 of them in there but they are still real small. They seem to have plenty of room and it's only 1 or 2 that do the bumping. I have never seen any of my other chicks do it but I've heard of other ppl say theirs have done it. I have a much larger tote to place them in when they get a little bigger. I'm waiting on my hubby to build me some larger wood brooders. I threaten to do it myself but he keeps saying he will do it. haha

I know that "talk" all too well myself! Haha - I end up doing things and he comes home like, "I said I would do it..." (yeah, a week or two ago)

I think he's more thankful that I actually do all the work with the birds and garden that I can do on my own though. ;-)

If it's just a couple that are doing it, you may very well have pecking order going on. My Aussies started that, a few of them, around a week old. If one hopped up on the roost, another would bump it off, and so on and so forth...one had to be first to the feeder and waterer and would FUSS up a storm if anyone else got to it first. Now, at 10 weeks old, he's my top roo! The only one he takes orders from is what seems to be the top hen - she bosses him around and he defers. It's rather cute.

Just thought I would share some updated pics of my babies, now 11 weeks old. I have two roos and a pullet, will try to get pics of the babies in the brooder later today!
