Although the option would be there if i needed to get more laying hens in the future…. But I am thinking that ordering sexed chicks from Freys would be easier!!
Awww...all that means is someone else has to deal with the extra roos. (and how the hatcheries deal with them isn't anywhere near as nice as how you would!):rant

Youngster mug for Monday:

Hi, folks. I am 38 pages behind, and I think it’s unlikely for me to catch up. I hope everyone is doing well. I finally had to break my two broodies. Little Mill only took about three days (after a full 30+ days of sitting.) I wasn’t as worried about her, because she seemed to have the sense to eat, preen, dust bathe and poop. And now she’s molting heavily.

Flo was a little harder to break. I felt so, so, so, so, so, mean breaking her. She was very determined, and it absolutely broke my heart. However, she was losing condition and seemed to not be eating, as every time I checked her crop, it was empty. She would eat if I brought baby bird formula to the nest. However, I am going out of town for four days and didn’t want to risk her just sitting there not eating. I do have somebody coming to lock them up at night and let them out in the morning, but I thought it was too much to ask to have them mix up baby bird formula and bring it to the nest every day. I just didn’t think I could risk it. Poor baby. Anyway, she’s happily out in the yard scratching with her buddies now.

And, yes, the little sidewalk is covered in dirt because the chickens have decided that that is the best couple of square feet on this whole 2/3 of an acre. LOL!

Mugs Monday.

Yes, it has a very slight tinge of blue toward the back, but look at the magnificent comb on Cashew. I don’t remember her having this large comb until this year.

That is a very large comb for an orpington lady. Check out Hattie’s

Good Progress

The video below is the longest sustained walk i have ever seen Gucci take. I took her out to the far side of the grass and she had to walk all the way back into the run as Lady Featherington would not come out for some reason.

This feels like real progress for the first time.

Slow but deliberate steps, stretching while on her feet, stepping up over the threshold, no wobbles, no collapsing: :ya
