Trust me, roosters have BIG cajones relative to their size! ( each the size of my thumb!!) It really isn't any wonder they are idiots as teens and overly armorous as adults.
Ratio of their size to body weight is astounding in Roos!!
And with the molting it gets harder to come close to them, I don't know if your chickens also act shy/ unfriendly when they molt ?
I absolutely find this, particularly in their early state of molting/regrowth - I think they are uncomfortable at this time, and being touched can be painful. ?Remember @BY Bob posting how Hattie 'retired' to the smaller coop for a couple weeks early in her moulting? Then, she rejoined the group - even though she wasn't finished, she appeared to me to be beyond that 'don't touch me' stage of feather growth.
