He's got 3. Both long flags and 1 of the longest straight feathers. One of the flags got snapped off the same length as the straight. He's gotten much patchier in his mane. I'm hoping he's stepping up the pace on the moult. It's getting cold and this storm is good for increased humidity.
Not a great time to be molting , I thought everyone finished this summer…. Thankfully her it’s turn nice and warm - even at night so the molters are ok but they need to stop the molting!

Ok seeing as I’m sort of trying to catch up on what’s been happening… y’all will have to forgive me I’m so far behind and a little out of touch. I’ve got a little house progress update, but no tax photos… maybe I will get some tomorrow. It’s been a little hectic here lately. I have some house peaks up (actually all of them) and the rain is back (just starting up), that’s what I get for not pulling the hatch over tonight and literally saying “it won’t rain tonight, right?” View attachment 3301013
Getting closer. I swear! Random slightly older/used Sammy pic for tax? View attachment 3301016
Still love that one tail feather 🥰

It is beginning to look like a house!! ❤️

Storm is almost as bad as Nellie was....or does this mean she has more feathers ...?

20221019_182145.jpg
Hector is getting to be almost as much of a poser as Cheetah. I find it fascinating that his breast feathers are almost a matte black while the rest are a glossy black.

20221019_103508.jpg
Twirp has lost a few wing feathers, but still looks sleek and graceful. Is she living up to her name and making moulting look good?

20221019_103713.jpg
Horus is finally starting to get the top flag tail feathers. He's growing those slowly, but he seems to have slowed down a little on the hormones too. (Only a little). He is a little taller than his daddy, but not much as the difference between a hamburg and a leghorn roo is about half a pound. Comparing all the boys next summer could be interesting.
20221019_102627.jpg
Silver is still working on those new tail feathers also. How she managed to NOT lose them last year I don't know, but I'm glad she's taking care of it now.

Pear still has down popping out in all kinds of random places, but has new feathers showing too. She has a tendency to stay in the coop or vanish, going off by herself and turning up in the coop before dark. She did this last year too and I have yet to figure out where she goes.

Whiskey is looking to be almost as broad as Hector, showing some of the Buff Orpington size in his background (maybe a quarter).

20221016_112236.jpg

Repeat pic, Kren is smaller than Whiskey, so remains to be seen if he will develop to similar stature.

20221019_102431.jpg
And Thing has a whole mass of new feathers growing in her crest, so will be getting another trim in another month or so. Kren is fascinated with her too, but caught her yesterday refusing to lift her tail up no matter how many times Kren tried. Hormones are cooling, but still have a ways to go.

He slept so soundly on my lap until the dog woke him up then he gripped my finger inside his little paw.

It makes me sad that some people will never know how loving these creatures are

@RoyalChick :hugs :hugs :hugs for you and Maggie

@BY Bob I hope you had a wonderful weekend visit with your daughter!❤️❤️

@ValerieJ Hope the possum doesn't continue to hang around. That said, they are only a threat to really small chicks, and/or eggs. They never seem to bother the tweens nor adults. they will however, steal all of your peaches if a racoon doesn't get them first! (right @RoyalChick ! ☹️)

Thank you everyone for your consoling thoughts. I am feeling a bit more optimistic about the coop (though it will be a bear to move it into it's final place when the run gets expanded!) But, it is what it is.

My chickens aren't happy:mad: at all about being stuck in their (ample, I might say - all but the littles have 15-20 sq. feet per chicken/duck)) runs. But, they have had a taste of free range all their lives, and are very plussed at not being able to have it now. (And are letting me know - loudly!:rant)

@rural mouse & @ManueB : I'm a bit jealous every time you show me your gorgeous chickens AND beautiful scenery... I worked long & hard to be able to get my current place...and it is only 6 acres, an L shaped lot with 4 acres 'square' by the house, and a 2 acre long rectangle that goes behind 2 houses - 2, 2acres lots cavred out by a past owner for their 2 kids . (I really wanted 10-15 acres min.) But I try to live vicariously through both of you with the expansive views. You have to already be wealthy to afford much for land around here.

Kids free ranging in the past:

Yes, they are outside their run here:

The former littles, who are teens now. The BR on the left is a roo, and I probably shouldn't, but I'll be keeping him, he is turning into a stunning young man! (I do need to get a recent pic of him!)

I'm not sure you would call this 'free ranging'...but my way out girls (I call them my Route 66 cluckle hut girls) would always immediately run to this spot in the summer upon release....to get their calgon moment in the sun!

So many wonderful pics! 🥰

Thank you. I am sure I would have broken already in your situation. I wish I could help you, too. You are so correct...even just having 1 other person makes everything so much easier!

Speaking of that....I'm hoping Andrew is doing okay. Seems like both of you are wearing yourselves thin...but not together (over extending, but together, has always seemed more rewarding to me than the same but apart) :hugs :hugs :hugs Hoping mom is doing okay, too.

if only things were black & white!
