Thanks @BY Bob. That is a great insight into the so called egg song. One of my hens took on escort duties as we have no rooster & she would often wait in the coop till they were done as well. Makes way more sense than, I laid an egg; come get it!

Unless you’ve gotten yourself egg eaters... then it really does seem like a “snack is here” song!

The many ways in which hens in all female flocks pick up the rooster duties always fascinates me. Having had a rooster and seen Jabber at work I now recognize it more easily. Your hen preforming escort duty. Patsy growing spurs when she became alpha hen. It is amazing how these complex animals adapt.

Agree completely... and I also had another “remembering Patsy” moment and getting all choked up over Lilie’s unanswered call. It really does change the flock dynamics having a Rooster. But I have to say the single gals down at the farm were often just as loud and raucous, if not more so than most of my ladies with their doting BF’s

There is just nothing like them. I will never be able to go back.

It really is so very true! I never really believed everyone when they would say that.. Cuz I was like.. come on, and egg is an egg... I have been only eating my own eggs for the last year now... every day!!! I went to my sisters a few weeks ago and boiled some eggs for tuna and went to eat one of them and I literally could not finish eating it :sick... now I know exactly what everyone means!!
I LOVE MY EGGS!!!

100% yes, now I eat less eggs (in the city I was cooking 6 per day minimum for our household. 2pc bacon and 2 eggs per person) but they are so much better! When we were staying at a nice hotel for our Christmas present/shopping trip, I tried* to eat their eggs... and mostly just pushed them around the plate :sick

I used to love sunny side up. Now prefer soft boiled. I guess it's an age thing.

I love my eggs every way! Usually over easy, hard steamed (boiled), or in an omelette granted the blue eggs are much better fried over easy IMO. Now I am an egg and scotch snob... sigh

Miss You

On Thursday after we got back last week, the sweetest thing happened. The entire flock came out and headed for the patio. They had not been there in some time and were looking to dig up the box behind the furniture. Once everyone was there, Maleficent peeled off from the flock and came back to hang out with me for 30 minutes. She sat first on the footstool and then on the arm of my chair. In the attached video if you look all the way in the distance you can see the patio furniture. The rest of the flock is behind the sectional. It was really sweet and I do think she missed me. :love

I love watching the chooks preening. It's very relaxing and you know they are feeling safe and contented.

Having grown up with dogs, then adding cats 10 years ago I was surprised to find what good company chooks are when they want to hang out with you.

All Together Now

The flock has always been bifurcated into old and new. With Lilly and Hattie running the roost, so to speak. (See what I did there:gig)

I think a byproduct of all the time cooped up together (I did it again, I am killing me this morning :gig) is that they have become more of a flock. In the few days since I returned I have seen many more instances where they are all together as opposed to broken into twos. This scene from the other night was an excellent example of something that rarely happened before all the time away.
