Glad you liked it. I did not want to take nothing away from our lovely Queen Aurora in writing this. I also thought about how my boys behaved and tried to capture their point of view. The boys need their side of the story told as well.
I think you captured their point of view very well. It is a great post.

My one worry about the plan is I have not tried to handle Bernadette and I worry she will freak out on me even in the dark. She is a big bird and if she freaks out it will be hard to contain her.

If you're really worried you could put her in a pet carrier or wicker basket to carry her over. She will hate you but that way you're sure she won't escape! Good luck
I had to take a girl off the roost at night, and none of my chickens are used to being handled. I put her in a plastic tote, put the cover on, and she was fine. I used the same thing to take her back outside. I kept the light very low to help keep her calm.

Using a headlamp with a red light helped a lot. They knew something was in the coop, but I was in and out fast, to keep them from getting too scared.

It's 7 degrees out. I put out their usual feed and water. I'll check in a bit to see it there are tracks in the snow out to the water bowl. I put food in the coop, but not water, to keep the moisture down.

If I don't see any tracks out to the water bowl, I'll put a bowl of snow in the coop. This has worked well in the past.

“Mr P, this is Xzit, yes that’s my name! This is my best side for a picture. I’m hoping that you are interested. I’m a hen of few needs, I just want food, treats, your personal attention at all times, and I need a rooster that isn’t afraid to cry!” D0AE2E43-890F-4785-A505-1639597CF9BD.jpeg

🥶

It is -2F here right now with wind chill gusts reaching into the -30’s 😱 It dropped from the 40’s to the single digits in less then two hours overnight. Crazy cold for Southern Ohio.

I went out this morning brought hot water with me in a bowl and added feed to the hotwater for a mash. They came down from the roosts to eat the warm food. Bucket heater is working well and their water remains unfrozen. Everyone looked good and Oreos comb (my bellwether for frostbite) looks healthy and is the normal pink color.

I did not open the pop door today. I don’t think I should since it could let in wind. Is this what you guys do in weather this brutal? I usually trust them to decide but this time my gut is saying keep in the coop for today.

So far so good!

Hope everyone else who is experiencing this weather is making out well!!

They are stunning!! I honestly think all chickens are far more beautiful then they get credit for.
Yep. Welcome to the club!

Sometimes we tend to regret things we did as chicks.

Now, we've still got heavy winds but snow is starting to blow with the wind. The snowfall is very light but that might change in the next few hours.
The wind was so strong, it blew branches down from our neighbor's pine tree. Now we have pines on our driveway.
You can put the pine branches in the chicken Run/coop. They can hop on and explore them (entertainment), and they also like to nibble on the pine needles (at least mine do) Great use of the dropped branches!!
