I’ve heard Brahmas are steady winter layers, but that is not so with my Buttercup. I actually don’t think she lays at all anymore.

That brings me to another question/thought. Some of my older gals don’t lay, but will still get their red, fleshy combs, talk a lot, and squat for me, same as the laying girls. They seem healthy like there’s no internal laying going on, but I dunno.

Thoughts?
Lilly had a wonderful red comb for 2 years while she only laid 3 or 4 eggs a year. I would not worry at all. They are done laying and it's OK that they are.

I’ve only seen a few double yolkers in my seven years of chicken servitude. Come to think of it, they may have only come from newly laying Leghorns.
I don't remember any double yolkers in all the years we have chickens and that includes 4 leghorns.

Oooohhh! Dark Brahmas have been on my list for some time. However, I’m trying not to order from hatcheries and the local breeder I found has limited breeds.I’ll gave to admire your beauties from afar.
This place isn't a commercial huge hatchery, it seems that he has a selection of unusual chickens but not millions of them.

I really wanted some Welbar and Legbar but they are sold out/unavailable. I might be able to get a couple if there are any 'left over pullets' from the hatch when I go to pick up my kiddies. I was trying to stick to auto-sexing breeds, I guess Jason (the owner) knows how to do sexing as I have ordered Brahma pullets. I think I read somewhere that this person works as a Veterinarian Tech, that's handy to know someone like that!!

Glad to hear that. I’m not worried about them not laying. Not that by itself… It’s just that they have laying behavior without producing eggs. That concerns me a little. Bridge been doing this for years and she still seems like my most robust hen, so I’m not really worried.

And while Penelope doesn't have a noticeable red comb or wattles, she might lay an egg once a week or so, but she is happy to be hanging around Mr P and she lets him breed her, so I imagine she must have some hormones or something going on there!

If there were any eggs I would be tempted to hatch it would be from her - Dorothy is her daughter and is such a lovely hen. My luck though I would get a Roo!
