Why do my Princesses wait until I am away to fulfill my dreams. Bernadette I now know laid her first egg literally the first day I was gone. And this morning I get this lousy picture from the coop cam which is all three dust bathing together. Actually Babs was kicking dirt into Bernadette’s face and Bernie seemed fine with that.

True Chicken Love - they are in such a trusting and safe place that they are all jelling as a cohesive group - I love it!

Are you serious about getting more? I have to say while I am eggcited to get my Brahma and Bielefelder (love those colours), I really truly love my mutts - they are so hardy and lay such a variety of eggs ❤️ I sure hope the new chicks are as hardy and vibrant!

Yes. I really am thinking of getting more this spring.
My target flock size has always been around 8 and I am still only at 3. There is ooodles of space so that isn’t a worry.
I just need to decide how many, what kind, where from, and when. Details, details!!

YES! More chooks!

The Brahmas fly better than silkies. They have real wing feathers and pretty strong wings. It is just their heavy body is a bit too much for any real lift - strong push off with legs and lots of flapping gets them a little bit of height for a short time.. It is more like a 'glide down' with much flapping. to prolong the descent!

You will love them, though, they are quire sweet :) And VERY fluffy! Quite soft, full feathering :)
I am looking forward to them - a bit worried about the heat in the summer with them, but I have a good industrial fan to move air around and keep everyone happy.
You can custom bend emt conduit. There are 'pipe-bender thingys (yup a very technical term!!)

for the length you have, you would probably use 2 10 footers, connected in the center top by a t or X connector (t for end, x for all others) and run a center pipe at the top for stability.

Think of this one as 'flipped' where the 'through' piece is the center top pipe.

Maker pipe has all sorts of connectors for conduit. I am planning on utilizing this for some protective areas when I get my 'pasture runs' completed. Since they will enclose about 1/3 of an acre and 1/2 acre respectively, hawk/predator proofing from the air will be impossible for the whole thing, but I do want to create a far amount of protected space attached to the mobile coops for when I am gone all day.

However, making the primary/permanent run bigger and safer is first priority - these are for later down the road!
Thanks! Good to know :) - when am I getting home??
I'm sad to learn this, she was a big, beautiful and special hen. I know Lety and you were very attached to her as you spoke of her very often. I do remember she had issues with the heat this summer. I hope the eggs hatch so you can have some chicks from her. And I seem to remember you already had a bunch of chicks from Cholo and her, no ?

It's such happy news ! I don't agree with By Bob, I don't think Bernadette did this to spite you. I have a conspiracy hormone theories and believe that pullets are like young girls that all get their periods at the same time. I think it's Babs and Elie that got Bernie to start laying. And I think the fact that they are all laying helps to bring them together!

I had netting before we covered the run on a much smaller surface (12m 2) and it was a huge pain with the snow. It wasn't as solid as what you are looking at, it was second hand olive netting, but the problem is not that it breaks but the weight of the snow. If you have wet snow or icy rain or hail it can get heavy very quickly, like you would need to shake things every two or three hours. If your netting is on a big surface, too wide to make the snow fall to the sides, or too high to reach easily with a stick it's a huge pain. I think the possibility to take it away in winter is a good one.
Yes I would plan on removing in the winter, I have some ideas running through my head how to do this. Can't wait to get home :)

Ah! My turn to be the enabler in that case :)

How about a couple Legbars, and a couple of Welbars, and a few Olive Eggers ❤️

I just want to let @Ponypoor and @knoturavggrl know that with your upcoming Brahma chicks I will be following those adventures closely. Brahma's are on my personal short list for future new breeds one day. Do not let the little Marshmallows know, but they actually took a spot in the flock that I wanted to have for either Brahma's or D'uccles. It is ok though, I am loving my adventure so far with the marshmallows, they are so smart already, and friendly and curious. When the time is right in the future I will have a token Brahma or two. Until then, when you two get your babies, I hope you post pictures often.
I absolutely will post pics! Probably to many haha

The marshmallow crew are all adorable 🥰 I cant wait to see what shenanigans they get up to. Super smart chickens just has to equal some troublemaking. (The good kind)

Idk exactly yet, I spoke with the breeder on Friday but she had company at the time. She is a show breeder so not a business hatchery type endeavor. The blue partridge line she is breeding is a side project of hers.

I got they did have the Blue Partridge Brahmas, that they are currently 12 weeks old and that she is definitely holding 3 pullets for me. I am waiting till Tuesday to follow up for more details since Monday is a holiday.

I hope to find out more on Tuesday.
