That old bat of a Momma hen of mine is breaking my heart. When it was confirmed her chicks would be picked up today I went out after dark to put them in the dog crate. For 3 weeks now she has let me touch, pet and hold her chicks in the evenings without a growl. Last night she knew something was up. When I got the first one, who since they are used to my nighttime pettings did not panic. Momma hen growled, and pecked at me. She then proceeded to try to flog me the other 2 times I had to get a chick from in front of her. To relieve her stress instead of putting the crate in the coop I left it beside where she was bedded down on the hay. She hopped off the hay and snugged up to the crate with her other chick. This morning she has spent most of her time beside the crate talking to her 3 other chicks, she will not get 10 feet away from it. I hate to do this to her, but, she will be done with them in a week, and I am leaving her 1. I just cannot risk to wait until she actually is done and has them roosting in the tree's to rehome them.

Now here’s the weather forecast: View attachment 3413545
Did I hear the word Blizzard on the news this morning about California? Surely not where you are though.

I was born in Mt. Shasta. My mom had photos of snow so deep you couldn't see out the first floor windows on the first day of spring. People always forget that California goes clear up to Oregon, I think.

Well the 3 chicks just left about 15 minutes ago. They will eventually be joining 4 more chicks that are the same age and size after quarantining. Their new owner is thrilled these 3 were broody raised as his others are being brooded by himself. He hopes Momma hens crew will be able to teach them things when they are combined and out free ranging.

Okay, so i think we got a runt. I hope she ends up surviving because she’s significantly less curious and just hides under mom. I would understand her being smaller if she was still wet from her hatch but she‘s old enough to be curious and running about like the others. Her feathers are completely fluffy so she’s just naturally tiny.
Let’s hope for the best. (I’m saying “she” because i really don’t want anymore boys!)
Just make sure that she is eating and drinking - that's all you can really do.

That's wonderful! Glad they are going to a place where they will be free to roam about and do chicken things - good job Mama hen!
