Hey CB! :frow The broody owl post came from somewhere else and fantastic owls seems to be a collection of owl posts. It credits the lady whose post it is but when I went to her page, I couldn’t see it (she has a lot of posts though). I follow another page about a girl owl called Michael and the lady says she’s a conservationist and is licenced to work with birds of prey. She said in one post “to all those people who say they wish they had an owl as a pet, no you don’t.”

That old bat of a Momma hen of mine is breaking my heart. When it was confirmed her chicks would be picked up today I went out after dark to put them in the dog crate. For 3 weeks now she has let me touch, pet and hold her chicks in the evenings without a growl. Last night she knew something was up. When I got the first one, who since they are used to my nighttime pettings did not panic. Momma hen growled, and pecked at me. She then proceeded to try to flog me the other 2 times I had to get a chick from in front of her. To relieve her stress instead of putting the crate in the coop I left it beside where she was bedded down on the hay. She hopped off the hay and snugged up to the crate with her other chick. This morning she has spent most of her time beside the crate talking to her 3 other chicks, she will not get 10 feet away from it. I hate to do this to her, but, she will be done with them in a week, and I am leaving her 1. I just cannot risk to wait until she actually is done and has them roosting in the tree's to rehome them.
Awwww - yes that is heartbreaking - in the short-term. But, they will be growing up and moving on, so it is the best time to send them to their new home. I am happy you are keeping the one chick for her to continue to coddle. Maybe she will keep that chick with her a bit longer now the others are gone.

I have to ask - is your hay inside an enclosed area that is protected from predators?

It was -33C (-27F) this morning - now it's -19C (-2F), that's right balmy :)

Never worked for BLU. He always got his off somehow
Ya I really need to find a good solution for Mr P, while he had his 'man-bun' he was much better at seeing things. I really want to get his hair-do under control.

Already making good decisions!!! Hire builders. Builders are lovely. Subcontractors at the very least… Oh, if I could go back five or six years… the things I would tell myself. 😂
Taxes: Water chickens love their mud

Why is it dark there? Are you sure that's a water chicken ? it looks suspiciously like mud duck....

He knows the man bun is out!
I say it's safety first! He can see and not run into things. Maybe I will just cut all the feathers back.

Hello girls - oh you are looking lovely, hello my frizzle lovely - Curly says hi!

Awww - so sweet, is that chick going to be marked like a Copper Maran? Does she have feathered legs? What breed/s do you think Mama hen is?
Momma Hen is a game hen. The person who brought her to the horse show that night so many years ago that she escaped from, he fought chickens and he tried ages to catch her. It was his brother that at the time leased out the barn and had the horse shows. After they left, it took us over a year to halfway tame that hen. He was still alive at the time and he had previously offered some money if we were ever able to catch her. I do not believe in cock fighting so until he passed I never put the word out that she was able to be caught. It is her breeding though that I think allowed her to survive on her own for so long. She is a survivor, surviving hawk, dog and raccoon attacks before she was tamed. I have to give credit to the fact that in honesty her being a game hen allowed that. I do not think most normal backyard breeds would have been able to do so. All 4 chicks inherited the feathered legs from Bubba. If Madea ends up looking like her siblings from 2 years ago she will be slightly taller then momma, but with the slender build. Color wise, somewhere between Karen and Goose.

I also want to point out that it stings a bit that the majority of my Marans mix hens get those gorgeous full copper hackle markings. Glares at Holly, Baby and Bunny. You were supposed to have some copper on your necks girls.

Oh, yes I do recall now that you did say she was a Game Hen, and I agree that is likely what kept her alive all this time. I have to say she is a actually a really nice hen, and hopefully this chick has some of her savvy!

When Rose hatched I was thrilled she was a pullet as Blanche was getting old, I had hoped that she would get the beautiful fiery hackle feathers like her mum but alas nope, they are blonde. I sometimes think that Blanche is a maran as her eggs are/were very dark. I haven't seen an egg from her in a very long time. Right after I hatched Rose she started to stop laying and last year had all these soft eggs :( then she stopped all together. When I get home I am going to see what's up with her and eggs, I might take a chance and hatch a couple eggs from her, Penelope and Sophia (ya I know I said I never would), and see if I luck out getting more pullets. Oh ya maybe throw a Marty egg in the mix.... hahaha!
