Awwww - yes that is heartbreaking - in the short-term. But, they will be growing up and moving on, so it is the best time to send them to their new home. I am happy you are keeping the one chick for her to continue to coddle. Maybe she will keep that chick with her a bit longer now the others are gone.

I have to ask - is your hay inside an enclosed area that is protected from predators?
No the hay area is not enclosed. What she is doing is taking the chicks under the boards that the hay is stacked up on. What I have been having to do at night to handle the chicks is lift up a piece of plywood to expose her.

Rest in peace, sweet Lucky. ❤️

I am so very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful girl and she had a great life with you. :hugs

So, turns out I was scammed. I am normally as suspicious as they come. However, this place had over 400 followers on FB hundreds of posts and pictures. Site said all the right things. No indication they were not what they appeared to be. I am absolutely mortified. But I am sharing it anyway because I hope as spring chick fever gets us and those close to us, don't forget to be on guard.

So no Brahma pics just disappointment on multiple levels. :(
That is absolutely horrible.
I hope you get your money back, and that they get what is coming to them.

I want it. That's 40 degrees warmer than here!
Ya seriously :)

Though have to say, it is VERY bright and sunny here - the snow makes it even brighter.

I don’t know where the bad weather went, but it’s sunshine and warm out now. The chooks are out playing in the sun.
Lovely! Well take some photos so we can all live vicariously through you with your now lovely weather ❤️

Oh she is sneaky! Hope that is a very secure place from coons and possums though!

How is your leg doing? Have you been able to get any more 'chicken time'? I was wondering yesterday but forgot to ask you.

Thirsty Thursday

For today's viewing pleasure I present a BFTP photo from June 23rd, 2022; Henny, Curly, and Rose drinking wild water from the puddles in the grass - yummy!

Aww. :( Just went and gathered eggs and changed out the frozen waterer (it never got above 32 today and the wind was cold) and I think my handsome Manny has a bit of frostbite on his comb. It rained all day yesterday and then dropped into the low 20's. Strange it would happen now when it got way colder this winter. Was it the damp? Anything to do for it? He really doesn't let me catch him. 😕

That old bat of a Momma hen of mine is breaking my heart. When it was confirmed her chicks would be picked up today I went out after dark to put them in the dog crate. For 3 weeks now she has let me touch, pet and hold her chicks in the evenings without a growl. Last night she knew something was up. When I got the first one, who since they are used to my nighttime pettings did not panic. Momma hen growled, and pecked at me. She then proceeded to try to flog me the other 2 times I had to get a chick from in front of her. To relieve her stress instead of putting the crate in the coop I left it beside where she was bedded down on the hay. She hopped off the hay and snugged up to the crate with her other chick. This morning she has spent most of her time beside the crate talking to her 3 other chicks, she will not get 10 feet away from it. I hate to do this to her, but, she will be done with them in a week, and I am leaving her 1. I just cannot risk to wait until she actually is done and has them roosting in the tree's to rehome them.
Chickens are way smarter than we give them credit for. They read us like a book. I am quite confident she knew something was up.... :hugs :hugs :hugs Hugs to both you AND Momma hen!

Probably damp cold. That doesn’t look too bad. Key thing to do is not touch it. A lot may just recover on its own.
