Ohhh, but snakes are out during winter, theyare just slow moving!!
Maybe where you are hahaha! It's snowy winter at my place - snakes won't be out of hibernation till May.

And were @ManueB lives in the mountains of France it's winter there also! Brrrr!

And there are no snakes at all, way up here at the 57th parallel where I am working! Double Brrrrrrrr!

Bully girl and Momma hen must be related. Momma is a top hen herself. When she was younger she was the top, time and age have slowed her down just a step and now Butter is #1. Actually I think if she was not broody the majority of the time she would still be #1. Momma's chicks are born with a silver spoon in their beak. They get the best dust bath spots, first at the food and treats and no one ever bullies them. They learn from her, see how she treats the other flock members and mimic it as early as a week old. I have had her chicks run up and chest bump other hens to get what they want. The hens back down, they know to, if not they have a angry ole bat bearing down on them.
ya - sounds like Henny Penny :) Anyone mess with her chicks and they were flattened fast!

And actually to be fair, no one really bothered her at all, her hatch mates watched over the chicks, and old Penelope even put up with them - and she is The Boss! I think if she ever went broody she would be the best mum ever! Too bad she has never gone broody....

The Eli mystery is solved. She wanted company while she laid her egg. We all went in and hung out inside the Chicken Palace and she laid her egg and life was good!
There is a lot of snow forecast for tonight and the temperature just dropped a lot so I have brought everyone in.
Eli jumped up onto the countertop in the servant's quarters in search of sunflower seeds and I got her to step back and stand on my hand.
:love :love :love

Bernie is big enough to cover a good dozen chicks if she ever went broody - she is a big gal! But it is a terrifying prospect - she might just eat them as little snacks.
She has decided not to use the regular nest boxes. I honestly don't blame her - they are a shade under 12" deep so it must feel very cramped to her. Fortunately I had already built some bigger and more open access ones under the main roost and for now she seems happy with those.
Oh no! I just thought - those Brahmas - they are going to need bigger boxes! And who knows about the other biel-a-thing-a-ma-bobbers! Another chore to do when I get home I guess.

Oh Bernie will be an awesome mama - she wont eat them haha. She will show them 'the way of the chicken' I am sure!

So you're getting a dozen chicks - good! I know everyone will be eggcited to hear that (;) )

I do love the wild little ones… probably why I like Mama Hen too. 😂 Yesterday between the lovely waterfall and the beach, we ran into a couple family friends of the in-laws and the two WWOOFers out for a hike. The goats were a little “frolicsome”, Ciaran butted the one older guy, the female WWOOFer tried to smack his forehead (not a good idea) Jimmy just wanted snuggles and food. Meanwhile Arduinna was going nuts. I leashed Ciaran, then she got jealous and was trying to hook and pound him, while I’m wrapped up in the leashes trying to leash Jimmy. And they are eating fresh apples in front of the Goats! They might be well behaved for us, but we definitely need to work a little more on the socialization again! 😂

Taxes, job, groceries, I know!! I hear it all the time!! 😅😂
Rent, utilities, phone and internet, car payment, doing all the housework, all the chores, and often all of this on top of a 40hr work week… and let’s not even broach the possibility of roommates and those complications, eh? Collecting rent from all roommates, on time, covering the rent when one moves out because they got feed up with another one eating all their snacks… toss in pets and rescue livestock?

Enjoy living with your family as long as you can! Stay home, milk it for all it’s worth! Get a job and get a solid head start, save a bunch of cash, and help support your family for a bit before you move out…

Sometimes finding a Husband/Wife makes things easier, sometimes it also makes some things harder. I didn’t realize how good I had it, and wish we had had enough space to have stayed home! Grandma, Mom, Me, and my Boyfriend… all living in a 1000sq foot 2 bedroom apartment with only one bathroom wasn’t sustainable. I moved out around 17 years old.

What an adventure!! May I ask what WWOOFer's are, though?

Oh.... that's a lot... ha, good thing I have six more years 'till I'm an adult!! 🤨 Can you guys do math? I am planning on getting an intern at a vet office, and then probably getting a job a little later on.

Willing Workers On Organic Farms. Usually younger folks in their early 20’s, often from Europe. People who will work limited hours on farms in exchange for housing and meals, but no pay. A lot of people do this to see other parts of the world. It’s a program where you pay a small fee to register and it allows people to coordinate their stay. It supposed to be about 20hrs a week of work. It’s basically what has kept this farm afloat the past decade or so, without any younger folks to help with labor.
