What I have heard about getting hens to adopt chicks is that they have to have been broody for two weeks or more because they have an internal clock that tells them when it's time for the eggs to hatch. What do think about my showing a few of my gals the babies and seeing any of them will think of taking them on?? I have noted that Marty, Fluffy, and Henny have roosted in the nest boxes and not pooped in them. I found that only the broodies do this (not poop in the box). It’s hilarious the size of the poop Marty delivers in the morning!!
They are very interested when I play the sound of the chicks, Marty and Fluffy will go sit on their eggs, but they won’t stay put darn it! But I wonder once the actual chicks arrive if they will get serious and brood the little suckers!
Thoughts anyone??
FYI I have a pick up date/time of Thursday at 1pm.
I had broodies all last year! This year so far no one wants to be broody - but of course, when I need them for a task they are off digging up worms, or sitting in my office pooping on my floor... Then again, silkies may be different. I seem to remember that the person who gave BYBob the eggs that Sydney hatched gave her silky some chicks when she wasn't even broody and she raised them!
I have some chicks coming this summer and am hoping that I can let one of my broodies raise them if the timing is right. There's usually someone broody from May through August here!
Oh I have a few like her - scare me to bits by running off and can't find them, act like they are keeling over, then plop out an egg and run off to dig worms! Sheesh!Another monster egg from Eli - 3.25oz (just over 92g).
I really wish she would stop with this.
She also escaped the fenced area while I had the fence off and tried to force her way back through it. She got in a big panic and I had to rescue her before she damaged herself and the fence.
If I didn't love her so much .....
And what is Parm doing today? is she limping? or just laying down?
Surprisingly, I haven't checked. I leave the house before they get out of the coop *clears throat* shed. But I'm hoping she's doing well. And what is Parm doing today? is she limping? or just laying down?
