What way does the prevailing wind come from? It seems like the second option is pretty exposed (potentially) to the wind in the winter. Would/could the coop itself act as a wind break for the run in the winter there?

So, even though the coop will be well insulated - you will still need a good amount of venting, so prevailing wind could cause some drafts in the winter.

1st option: I like the extra shade in the summer - and they looked like mostly deciduous trees, so won't cause shade in the winter - when you WANT the sun to reach the coop/run area.

Really, it comes down to 2 things: what will work for you, and what will work best (climate/wind/shade, etc) wise for the chooks.
We did decide to go with the shade. Winds seem to come from the west mostly here, but it varies. But in the end, our winters are pretty mild. With an insulated coop, I'm not terribly worried about cold. We have had summers worse than this one though, not Texas hot, but we hit 110 a couple times last year.

So shade it is.

Sorry you are going through this.
Let me give you a big hug. :hugs
And I will accept one in return as at the end of a truly crappy day I had to make the difficult decision to euthanize one of my beloved feline family members.
He had a good life - but at only ten years a really short one by cat standards.
I have been bawling my eyes out and now just need to go sleep.
Oh I am sorry to hear this, yes 10 is short. Sending a thousand hugs your way :hugs

Oh yes :hugs :hugs
We had a great cat about that age whom we had to euthanize also. He was a wonderfully sweet cat, as I'm sure your dear fellow was too. :hugs

What is this thing?
I know it's a chicken, but is it another cockerel? And what breed is it?

Can you not even tube feed some sugar water? I use honey and make a sugary water with that. Keep her hydrated and energy from sugar .
I'm not sure if sugar water would be the same as food? I will check her crop again and see if she's drinking at all. I didn't feel it today but will check it tomorrow.

How do I tell if that is a pullet stance? Maybe I should get the certified Cockerel and compare?
And she is supposed to be a Wyandotte. Did something go wrong with her?
Oh don't get the idea I know what I'm talking about! I barely do. The long legs make me think of game hens, which most chickens have in their heritage to one degree or another. The stance is upright neck and pretty flat back, whereas a cockerel would be more sloped I think, but this is just one picture. The neck and saddle feathers don't look that pointed to me either. But wait until the more experienced ones here weigh in!
