These little ones, haven’t spent one minute in prison. But I call it “protective custody” until they got a bit bigger. IMG_0380.jpeg IMG_0379.jpeg

It is an electric device for preventing water from freezing in livestock water troughs.
You can get little ones that are safe in plastic buckets too.
I considered getting one for my Princesses but decided to use a heated base instead.
Oh, good reminder, time to switch over from bug zapper to heated waterer base. Well, maybe no rush. I’ve got a few weeks yet although it is getting down to freezing at night next week.

Tax: Bernie with a face full of mash. She does not seem to be molting but she hasn’t laid an egg in ten days. She doesn’t seem ill and certainly has a healthy appetite!

RC, I I bet she is doing a slow molt. Her breast feathers seem a bit rumpled - which is unusual for her ...so she may be slow molting - and since she isn't a 'strong layer', it might be just enough to kick laying to the curb for now.

The plus side of this (her taking forever to lay, and then stopping at the drop of a hat) is that she should lay a few eggs during the spring flush until she is a very, very old hen. Maybe she is saving those eggs in case she decides to raise a brood after '40';);).

Hmmmm 🤔 maybe someone should invent one that is rechargeable?
Heat takes a lot of energy, hence either a very large battery, or a heater that would be essentially useless for Marie's purpose. They do have tiny battery operated heated socks, but they don't need to generate much heat, and only last one day (less than 8 hours - usually somewhere around 6) at that tiny output. Not significant enough output for a water bowl that isn't tucked inside a cozy boot with wool socks and a person's foot that generates heat, too!

How much time do those jailbirds got to serve in prison? Doesn’t seem fair, they look innocent to me! :idunno
looks can be deceiving! They are trouble, I tell you! I think that is why they wear their jailbird outfit all the time. :lau

A fluffy bottomed hooligan (jailbird) just for you, Alex! :)

Note, they may be jailbirds, but I love them anyways!:love:love

Oh! So that’s what Penelope is doing 😁.

I think you may be right - she is looking a bit unusually rumpled.
So much for 'breed' being a strong determinant in egg laying behavior.
Bernie - takes 11 months to lay an egg, then does so at the rate of a couple of eggs a week and then stops in October.
Sylvie - same breed - starts laying at 5 months, laid every day for a month and then went broody.
