Bedtime chicky check, Samara let me check her crop. A little squishy but it's hard to tell with all that fluff! Morinth let me just barely touch hers, just enough to know she had food in there. :)

The teens are all in the nestboxes from what I saw. I didn't look hard because I was afraid of getting pecked again by Samara...

Did my nails and trimmed them way back...we'll see how long the gemstones last...

Hopefully tomorrow I can show them how to use the waterers. They had access to wild water puddles all day, and probably filled up on spilled feed...we'll see tomorrow.

I find the whole molting thing really stressful - I know it is normal, but it seems like such a bad idea to lose your nice down jacket just when it is getting cold.
And they always look so miserable!
My friend Maggie (RIP) used to refuse to eat commercial food when she molted so I was constantly stressed that she would starve to death. She would stand out in the rain catching earthworms instead of anything I could tempt her with.
I don’t see wild birds moulting like this and never this time of year. For me I feel it’s a domestic poultry thing, a byproduct of their breeding 😟 I just feel so badly for them, and I know what you mean; some of mine also become very picky eating, I try to make sure those get special care to ensure they are ok.

It is true - you never see a molting pigeon, sparrow, heron, or for that matter hawk.
But surely they must renew their feathers too.
Strange.
Bernie is down to 3 tail feathers. Everyone is cranky.

They are smart and will figure water out, my chooks are fascinated by the leaky water hose/tap, they sip at the water drops 😊💕

Those little ladies look very comfortable, being pecked is par for the course (owww!), and anything shiny is fair game - like my friends Diamond engagement ring 😆 she lost the Diamond when a hen pecked it and she never did find it or get it back!

Love the nails 💕 just on time for Hallowe’en 😊💕

I see geese here lose feathers in the spring when they have goslings but they never go bald, I feel that wild birds must lose feathers through the summer and replace as they lose them. They couldn’t possibly lose so many feathers and be able to evade predators.

Looks like old Sharpie is also starting to moult. All I have to do is look for a pile of feathers on the roost ledges - poor chook-chooks.

In my experience, your friend didn’t wait long enough. Usually when you lose something so valuable, it takes time for it to pass, and eventually there will be some success in the end! :lau

Well she could have cooked the chook, but with a bunch of red chooks the problem is trying to figure out which one is which 😆
