Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Oh no!
That is so sad. I know you have given her a good life, but still, I still hoped she would keep on going for a while longer.

I've washed her bottom and given her a little water with honey and salt but she is lifeless

I let her by princess side for a few minutes because the sun came out. Now she is sleeping in a box of straw.

Princess seems to be oblivious and is enjoying the garden

Larry hasn’t laid a normal egg in over a year. She has been laying brittle or soft eggs. She would lay an egg and it would break and make a mess all over the egg in a nest. I am hoping she will pick her own nest box when she starts again just like m case she starts with soft eggs again; but you know chickens - one day they will lay an egg in one box, the next day who knows ha!

Since she moulted she hasn’t laid an egg. I am hoping that not laying for a while will build up her calcium reserves. Also I have not seen Mr P breeding her, or Raven. I know Raven lays normal eggs, and even Sharpie was laying good eggs. But none of them have been laying now.

But can you imagine a cute BR with a sassy topknot like Butterscotch has?

In the tradition of the Princesses at the Chicken Palace to lay their first egg when I am traveling, Tassels laid her first egg.
She miscalculated just a bit because late last night as I am rushing around getting ready to go I decide to check again for eggs.
So I got the egg, but no chance of a picture of the two of them together.
It is small, and khaki colored.
Here are eggs from all my layers. The one from Sylvie is from before she went broody. The others were all from yesterday.

They are both fine. Blucote would color the wound so other hens don't peck at it. They are drawn to the red color of an open wound. I would not mix in another hen until I colored or converted the wound.

Am I crazy everyone? I thought vetricyn was colored.

The saline is very good for washing.

I think my niece sent over something like it I must check or maybe it’s Vetrx,…

Don't let her collect eggs until after that

This morning I hauled Henny off the nest to eat drink poop. I placed a small towel over the eggs to help keep them warm.

She ran around eating, she dug through some horse poop picking at bits of grain, I laughed when Ren Hen calmly cleaned Henny’s beak and beard - the look Henny initially gave her was hilarious. But she let Red continue.

Then after about 15 min she hustled back to her nest, I removed the towel and she snuggled back onto the eggs. I am a bit worried the back two eggs might not be getting enough warmth, I may shuffle the eggs a bit twice a day when she is off the nest to make sure they all get warmth. I also numbered Mart’s eggs (1, 2, 3) as I hadn’t done that yet.

Tuesday evening I will candle the eggs to make sure no cracks, and see if I can see any veins - darker egg shell can be tough though. I really don’t know how Rebecca checks her Marans eggs!!

A few more pictures I took yesterday. The young ones are growing up and looking like laidies now. I am glad I caved and got grandma 2 barred rocks. They are not as friendly as my childhood Dominiques but they are friendly enough. It is also comforting to see stripes in my flock, they bring back many happy memories.

They are all beautiful. I too just love seeing a barred rock wander across the yard. It seems right.

So I let Cluckie, my Brahma out of the chicken hospital because her derriere is mostly cleared up now, and she was having fits. I bet she was saying, "Let me out, or I'll peck the mesh of the window open and escape!". A minute after I let her out, she attacked Stormfeather, my young Buff Orpington cockerel that is learning about being a rooster from Ijak. There was a series of 3 fights that I had to break up. I don't know what happened between them!

Awww poor wee fella! I sure they will figure it out, and it not the worst thing for wee cockerel to be put in his place by a hen.
