We could get wet snowflakes tomorrow, just in time for Halloween. Scary!

I got the filter material over the openings in the coop yesterday. I need to get the windbreak panels up today. And the shower curtains too. It'll be their 4th year (!) and I need to see if any of them need to be replaced. I would never have thought that they'd make it through 3 winters, but they did, easily.

I bought one of them new, for the chicken run. The rest have been used as shower curtains, so they were "free."

I was looking at the gate which is part of my ‘Rooster Run’ and I think I will also put up some of those clear shower curtains as a wind break - I bet it will be a great sun catch location for them to hang out near.

Do you staple or screw them down with strapping to prevent them flapping in the wind?

I attach them with zip ties through the hanging holes at the top. Grommetted holes are nicely reinforced for this! I lay the extra length flat on the ground, and cover it with raked up leaves and a few fist sized rocks right by the fence. I overlap the curtains by 3-4", and do my best to get them tight to the fence so that they don't flap around in the wind. So far, this has been enough to keep them in place. I have thought about using bungee cords to hold them, but haven't needed to.

My main concern was that they'd get brittle in the sunlight. They're still pliable, which surprises me. Someday, I'll make panels that I can attach to the fence -- with zip ties, of course, since that's what holds most of my run together.

I have found that a feed bag covers the width of the door to the run very well. I staple that to the frame, white side in.

But they don’t have fruit that I really want and pay a fortune for: figs, bananas, mango….

Bananas and mangos, even though they (rarely) sell them in this desert, they don't grow! Trust me, I've tried it already.

You need a tropical place for those.

As for the figs, they are pretty much independent once they get established into the soil. Just give them water and some fertilizing every few months. Oh, and maybe some mulch and pruning in fall.

In my yard I have peaches, plums, pomegranates, nectarines, grapes, a certain type of apple, and some more like pluots and even a lemon tree.

And some of our lovely colors. Yep, that dying oak will be trimmed as soon as dad can get the limb cutting machine from his job.

We have mostly Oak out here, I'd love to plant some aspen or birch but dad says the roots are too shallow to have near the house. They sound amazing in the wind though, like a waterfall!

Ditto. We have a lot of heavy winds here so I’m still wondering whether just zip tying shower curtains and putting weight below would be sufficient. My run is against our house, so one side is completely sheltered from wind. But I still remember the day we put on our brand new polytunnel and hadn't finished filling up the trenches on the side before night, and woke up to find it got half torn off and two hoops broken.

They are getting very pretty boys ! How big are they ? It's hard to get an idea of size on pictures.

@Lexicon how is Cesario s leg, and how did he take spending the day in the crate ?

Catching up pony Sunday yesterday. The last lambs for the season and my neighbour's highland cows enjoying for once british like weather.

After a few gorgeous but windy days we are getting rain today so some of my mugs are a bit grey. The sunny ones are from a few days ago.

Lulu, late in comb development but the most chatty of the pullets.

Gaston is molting from the neck and the tail and he looks so skinny ! He seems in good shape but he has a horrible rattling sound in his throat. I can't see anything looking in, so it must be respiratory - but he doesn't seem to be bothered. Not sure if I should do anything.

Pied-Beau. The first rehoming was a failure, so we will switch to another option and he gets to spend another two weeks with us .
