This shows you have a lot of maturity. I had a blind chicken as a child that my mom had to convince me to let them process. She did make a great soup...but it hurt a lot.
Thank you. It certainly isn’t ever easy. One of the chickens that I processed used to be one of my roosters. (Pastel’s half brother) He was an only chick and I was his “mama.” He would fly up on my head as a chick but when I put him outside with the others he started to attack me. I rehomed him and about a year later my friend wanted to process him, so I did, along with some RIR’s she raised for meat. I’m sorry about your chicken. How did she go blind?

They are spectacular. And raised through the winter too. I would have never thought it possible.
I actually think they have done better than the summer raised chicks, they definitely aren’t heat stressed or have bugs and mosquitoes bugging them. If they were chilly mama kept them warm, or they would hang out under the sweeter heater.

BUT the biggest factor is that it has been extremely mild here this winter. We haven’t had any -20 or -30 weather at all. Did I just jinx myself? Also my barn is fairly snug and they have lots of places to snuggle down and keep warm - a nice straw bedded stall is well appreciated by all.

The winter Henny raised her first brood it was extremely cold and they faired really well also, sometimes I think Henny is a Cochin not a satin silkie with all those fluffy feathers - what does everyone think?

Cochin?
