Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go out and yank Bubba off the roost. I did not notice it while I was out but from the pictures his leg has been bleeding. I have to go confirm what I expect is his spur has been broken off.
The next Aurora for certain. How perfect that she lays pink eggs! Congratulations you have a great one there.I am several days behind again. I will get caught up tonight but I need to show you all this and make a announcement.
Owly is indeed laying. I have not caught her in the act, but I have caught her singing the egg song not too far away from a freshly laid warm egg a couple times this week.

Queen Aurora has always been her role model. She idolizes her and strives to do everything in her little chicken body to live up to the Great Queens standards. Grow a mighty fine beard. Check.

Always be underfoot so if anything is handed out she gets to be first to sample, even if it means taking a peck from her Queen Raven. Check

She is among the youngest of the flock so you would think she would be near the bottom of the pecking order. You would be wrong. She is bold, she is fearless and she also shadows Raven. I have caught her putting some of the other hens in their place. Well, the place she thinks they belong. She sticks up for Poppet, if a hen tries to be mean to her while she is out with me Owly gives them a thumping. I do see this little girl one day striving to be Queen herself. If she keeps learning, I do not think that will be a bad thing. Long live Raven though so many years into the future please.
Most importantly, the Great Queen Aurora decrees that the most special eggs are pink. She vows that much to her humans annoyance that Blue eggs are overrated, pink is what one must strive for.
Owly's response...

I will let Owly know she has pleased Aurora. Owly has one request of me that I will not oblige her with. She has heard of the great pleasure Aurora gets from flipping Phyllis. She wants her own Phyllis to flipThe next Aurora for certain. How perfect that she lays pink eggs! Congratulations you have a great one there.![]()

And hearty congratulations from the Queen herself! She is most pleased with Owly.

She is just darling. Now for some Poppet love.
I spent a good bit of time trying to get a few pictures of her. SHE WILL NOT STAY STILL.
I have 30 various photo's of this.

Here are the decent ones. At least she is in focus in these.

One to make Alex twitch uncontrollably
View attachment 3743038Egg news for Poppet. Nothing, still waiting. Finally for the first time I saw some rooster interest in her. I had to swiftly intervene and shoo him away. Of course it would be Bubba who would show interest in her and attempt to breed her.
This picture illustrates why it just cannot happen.

Branch, who Poppet is intended for, has he shown interest. NO, he cannot get his head out of the cochin and leghorn girls behinds to notice her darn him.
Little Man, it is time me and you sat down and had a long serious talk about your choice of lady friends.

Roost flipping is one Aurora's great pleasures. She is so glad that Owly is enjoying it too.I will let Owly know she has pleased Aurora. Owly has one request of me that I will not oblige her with. She has heard of the great pleasure Aurora gets from flipping Phyllis. She wants her own Phyllis to flip. Firm no on that one. Instead she has had to resort to Thumping the cochins and other random hens. She also now throws hens off the roost. The rocks to be exact. I will not lie I congratulate her every time. The rocks have bullied her and their hatchmates on the roost since they started roosting. I have threatened throwing them off myself for their doings on the roost. Now Owly will tolerate one, maybe two pecks from them. If they do not stop she strikes back and does not relent until they get off the roost.
Aww - the princess!Baby Pictures!!
No 5th Hatchday is complete without baby pictures. Our Queen did not come to us as a chick. She came as a 6 week old pullet. Even so she was going through a juvenile molt and was a little rough looking at the time. Maybe we will call it "awkward".

FWIW, we found the missing ball mid afternoon when the melting started to reveal it. And the snow started up again around sun down. Meanwhile Sherlock tried burrowing under the snow. He got his head buried all the way to his shoulders. ..and popped back up hard a second before I snapped the pic....Gosh autocorrect sucks!
I meant Goof ball!
