Hahaha he is such a ham, dogs and snow - so funny!

Your deer are different from the white tail we have here.

My gang see snow and generally don’t venture too far, wimps hahaha.
We have white tail, but they stay down along the creek in the brush. The mule deer prefer hillsides and range quite a bit more. They're also a little bigger than the whitetail.

Nimbus decided wading through the snow wasn't for her and "flew" (more like skittered with the aid of her wings over the soft fresh powder) back. Pippa also decided the snow (at breakfast) wasn't for her, bit waded through a shorter route back to the bird door

Yes. I noticed how bare it was too. And mine really isn’t anything like that bare even in winter.
One thing I could do though is put a gate hook on the outside of the people door so it doesn’t have to stay fully open for the Princesses to come and go. I am sure a hawk would fit through the gap - but it would be one more obstacle.

On the netting I didn’t have any wide enough to go all the way to the ground. And if it goes to the ground I think chickens will get tangled in it.
But I can see a relatively easy way to extend it right up to the tree on the left (which is their preferred location).

I am also going to hang some of that tape that twists and reflects the light in distracting ways. Or maybe just a bunch of old CDs.

I don’t see a way to be completely risk free while giving them the joy of being out and about, so I guess I am just trying to improve their chances.

I have some additional shrub planting ideas and I am dreaming about building a little chicken gazebo from the scrap left over from building the Chicken Palace.
I have a gazebo and love it. Practically live in it during the summer. It would be cute if they had one too and in my design it would give them a nice place to hang out that is out in their yard, but definitely under a roof.
All my bird netting did was to make it a little harder so either the hawk would go looking for easier food or in order to give the girls more time to get away safely.

When they can hunt like this it doesn't matter what you put up you can't stop them.

Well, I made the Owly announcement a day to early. Pink eggs have to be the barred rocks.
I watched her lay this 5 minutes ago, her first ever egg. I see sis and Rosie fighting over this beauty. Mom also now is demanding her name be officially Aunt Olive.

Wow is it ever weird and strange having a green egg in the carton. I find it weird having white eggs after working so hard to get all the shades of brown. Never did I think I would set out after a blue/green egg yet here we are. I find it beautiful, I just never thought I would have my own.
They are all beautiful 💕 I love all the colours you have - what a mix of lovely colours ❤️

More velociraptor prints 😊

Your kiddos are way braver than mine! Who won’t even tolerate snow at all!
