So I’m spending the night a 45 min drive away from home- but heard around 9pm that my whole neighborhood lost power. Dagnabit! The chick’s heater would have turned off! And it wouldn’t turn back on by itself even once the power was restored. So I had to load myself into the car to swing by the house and rescue the babies.

But I got baby photos 😁

Poor baby. It’s been a tough couple of days day for her. Be born, sexed, travel from the hatchery, travel from the feed store, and thrust into a brooder full of older chicks who take up so much room at the dinner table! She seemed a little lethargic but had a nice full crop and good poos. Lethargy could have been because it was 10pm.

Oh now that is a sweetie pie. It's a good thing Peavey Mart doesn't get chicks in until 30th of April hahaha. All these babies on display really get my mama kelly instincts going :)

Slept in till almost 6am (I needed that), went to the barn and did chores, Teddy attacked my boots and got is beak tangled in my boot laces and freaked out - rescued him the beast. Then hauling hay to the hay hut dragging the wheelbarrow full of hay, I got stuck in the mud, my boot came off and I stepped stocking footed in the mud ( :sick ), then now I was just finishing my cuppa tea and I forgot to remove the teabag - now that was a strong cuppa!

Fairly normal morning so far :lau

OK peeps - I am heading to Peavey (no chicks don't worry), and then Walmart for some groceries. My uncle is coming up today to help remove that gazebo that got flattened by the snow. The roof trusses are all mangled, but the sides of that thing are perfect.

Anyways I put dibs on the sides as I figure it will make an awesome 10x12 brooder/hospital/jail run and it has fancy wicker styled corners so it will be nice at the barn - now to find a place to put it.....

Oh to be a cat and sleep and relax like this,

Hey you disturbed me Hooman....

The babies are all trying to roost with the adults.....who tell them "No, go warm up with Mama"
Awwww - they really do integrate really fast don't they? And they handle the cold better than expected - at least I found.

I can't wait to see what the silkie eggs produce - all assuming Fluffy and Curly start adding to the eggs. Seems Henny is only laying about every other day, I got one from her this morning. Marty is laying 'about' every day but I didn't get one from her yesterday. Her eggs will be the only ones I can tell from the others as her have nice sparkles on them. Might have to try lipstick on their butts to see who lays what :gig:gig

She is SO cute. Wait until I get photos of her all snuggled in my cupped hand for scale. You would DEFINITELY get no less than four chicks to appease those instincts then. And April 30th isn’t that far away! Your chicks are about to go in the incubator.

I have been forgetting something for a long time.
I hatched another batch of chicks, after the first one (which I sold). Yeah. Even though I'm getting twelve chicks from Peavey Mart. Most of them look to be cockerels, so probably will go into the freezer, but there's definitely one of the roosters that really captured me. He's Big Buff's offspring, buff and red like him too, so of course, the obvious name for him would be Red. Red likes to sit on my shoulder (first cock to do that) and he loves my finger for some reason. He's definitely a cockerel (huge wattles). He's got a sister (Caroline) who is definitely a pullet. They make a great pair. (Caroline's colouring says girl, as do her comb and wattles, which are nonexistent.

Oops. I am hatching yet another (they are in the incubator) which I plan to sell. The Peavey chicks are ordered.

Oh no. More chicks. Gonna have them coming out of my ears soon.

Last night I hauled Shanny off the roost and brought her inside with me and Sir Jaffar. It was a nice quiet evening for us three. Those two were talking softly amongst themselves, as I interjected with a few ideas I had for the future.
Shenandoah sure is getting big.
Maybe 7-8 pounds of feathered love ❤️ I need one of those baby scales to weigh my chooks with.
