Oh, how much I just love to hear Mr Wyandottey screaming at 0:500 every morning. :barnie
I’m having trouble setting his time cluck to 0:700
Rudy just waits. He is too sophisticated to be so rude! :gig IMG_4817.jpeg

Last night was the coldest night of the year so far. Temps dropped down to 22 F. Perfect weather to hatch and raise Turkey in right Poppet . I have the coop partially winterized, still need to add the final touches. Poppet and Turkey got to spend the night in the tote freshly bedded and with wind blocked from all sides. They also have their own food and water dish in it so that this morning I could wait a little bit to let them out. I just released them about 20 minutes ago. They are staying in the coop today. I gave them fresh water and their little box must have been toasty. Their water did not freeze over. It is currently 30 right now and not supposed to get any higher. Poppet is being such a good momma. First thing she did though was dust bath when she was let out. I took that opportunity to hold little Turkey and she let me. She has not went after me once. I cannot say the same for the other chickens who were very curious when I found them in Russ's stall yesterday. I saw first hand Poppet can be a witch if needed. Poor Randy, he just wanted to get a look at his son or daughter. Turkey is a very robust and active chick although after her dust bath she had it eat, get a drink and right back under her to warm up. I'm going to say it hatched Thursday so today I am calling it 48 hours old. 5 more days and I will start breathing again.

Good luck, little Turkey! Keep that baby warm, Poppet!

Cute little thing! I hope it thrives and grows up to be a great Pullet

So-o-o-o CUTE! 2 ckicks would be nice but 1 is all Poppet needs really. ❤️ All Silkies wanna do is to be a momma.
I have faith in Poppet. I just worry the first week when any hen hatches or I hatch them myself. Losses happen even under the best of circumstances. From the outside Turkey looks perfect, and is eating drinking and pooping. Still there is a chance I could come out this first week and find her passed for no visible reason. I wish she had 2 or 3, more work on us both but a better chance overall for success for Poppet. Nothing I can do about it. As I said when she went broody in a place I could not reach, what will happen will happen. I just hate to see a Momma put in the work to only hatch 1 and then loose it soon after.

Poppet also has not been bad being a silkie. She is around 1 1/2 years old and this is her 2nd time being broody. The first was around a year old and she was terrible to break. 5 weeks of sitting on nothing.

That’s awesome! So the wee one hatched the same time as Betty and Bert last year! And they did fine. As long as they are out of the wind and wet, have a place to warm up (mum) I found the chicks were fine! Even at a couple weeks when they saw snow they were ok.

I really wish that my Mr Wyandottey would calm down. He stalks the Rockettes so much that they don’t even bother coming down front the barn rafters. :hit
Yep my youngsters are naughty like this also, Bert catches them and clobbers them though. Good Bert!
