I saw one grasshopper in the front yard, but it was huge and I didn’t want to fight with an insect at the moment.
Beware ~ It's wise not to fight those things w/ bare hands ~ 🦗 grasshoppers OR locusts (green or brown). Green ones are small but the 3-inch brown or speckled ones are dangerous.

I picked up a huge brown speckled locust holding it from the top of its big body & its razor sharp legs sliced my fingers to bleeding it fought to free itself ~ & this was AFTER I had stunned it w/ a trowel. I dropped it to crush it some more w/ the trowel I was so mad. I was going to feed it alive to the hens but thought against it when I saw how vicious the beast was. I didn't want it to hurt the hens.

When I was sure it was dead w/ a crunch sound I tossed the carcass to the hens & watched the Silkies deftly ripping the monster insect apart w/ the juicy head their favourite part. The body & thighs were eaten but not the rigid razor legs. My brave cat-chasing Dominique Dana had nothing to do w/ the locust.

Are you accustomed to this kind of winter every year?

My DS/DIL live in Yucca Valley near Joshua Tree over the hill from Palm Springs. Desert area but they get snow too. Not strange to see two cars covered in snow but funny to see Joshua cactus covered in snow. Joshua is a protected cactus & illegal to cut down in the yard.

Oh yeah Michigan winters are usually pretty snowy. Last year was oddly warm, but it looks like it's gone back to the normal cycle of deep snow, a week of slight thaw, then back to snow. We'll have to see how it plays out to be sure.

Why oh why oh why?
It is brutal today - temperature highs in the 20s (F) but very windy so feels much colder.
So naturally both Piglet and Sylvie decided to drop almost all their feathers overnight.
That's exactly what I had happen.

When you said 20s I thought in Celsius, and was mildly confused for a second or two.
