Do you refrigerate your meds? My vet said it was a good practice. Your climate is always so cool you probably don't need to do that?
Summers are hot and humid so during the summer everything gets refrigerated.

Winters it’s more about preventing things from freezing!

I have a question for you all (thinking @rural mouse in particular, but anyone can jump in!)

I picked up what was supposed to be some assorted marans chicks for my broodie girl who just wouldn't quit and kept getting kicked off her next, so eggs didn't hatch. Well, 3, I am sure are at least part Marans ( 2 clean legged copper marans, and 1 with no real copper neck - just a few flecks here and there. Two are red. Like RIR red....BUT one has a straight comb, like a RIR would have. The other has a rose comb. I am perplexed as to what it could be. Hoover hatchery supplies TSC, which is where they came from. I was thinking maybe Cinnamon Queen? Note that my chicken is much darker red than their picture...and does indeed have a rose comb not a straight comb. But, Dominiques have a different comb, and maybe she got darker colouring from dad (i.e. not as 'washed out' from mom's white???). I was also thinking maybe part Wyandotte, due to the comb...but I don't see that they have any solid Wyandottes, only laced/multi coloured. She has absolutely no lacing.....She hasn't started laying yet, but her Red sister with straight comb just did and lays a medium-to-light brown egg. (?smidge darker than a Plymouth rock's egg, but no where near the depth of colour as a Welsummer - never mind a marans...and no speckles.) But again, that is 'sister'/chickmate, not her - as far as I know she hasn't started to lay yet. BUT, if she has, it would be light brown...as I found 2 very small brown eggs yesterday - so one might be hers. Comb is red enough to lay, but I have never had a pullet start laying this late in the year (i.e. darkness), so it might be one of my Buffs coming back into lay from moulting. If the size doesn't jump up to medium within a couple of eggs, though, it will be from a pullet.

Any thoughts anyone?
1) Rose comb
2) Red, not quite as intense/mahogany as RIR pic on Hoover's site, but most assuredly darker than the Cinnamon Queen pic. on Hoover's site. Much more like this picture of a RIR: (with. less black in the tail feathers, and, of course, a rose comb!)

Browsing through Hoover's brown egg layers, they have in red tones:

RIR
Production Red
Buckeye
Red Star
Rainbow
Cinnamon Queen
Partridge Plymouth Rock
Partridge Chantecler
Partridge Cochin

The partridges and the Buckeye can all be eliminated due to the chevrons on the feathers, comb type, feathered feet type traits.

Rainbow has to stay on the maybe list due to anything goes, but is unlikely as it usually has a straight comb.

RIR, Red Star, Production Red, and Cinnamon Queen are all VERY similar with the RIR being the darkest (by just a smidge). The description of the CQ does state they can be straight or rose combed. That makes it the most likely at the moment, with Production Red being next on the list (no genetic history is provided)

Nice silkies.

Since we have tagged alex to join the fun rooster shopping I need to explain to everyone why I am not jumping the gun yet and buying a boy right this second.

My group of 6 are 6 months old. You would think I would have known if there was a cockerel in it by now but silkies are difficult. With Branch, he had a sibling who I swore was a pullet right up until the day at 6 months old he crowed at me. There is only 1 way to be sure if you do not DNA sex. Wait until they either crow or lay a egg. I am waiting. Ideally, I have a Branch son who is torturing me. I say ideally because I miss my boy, I really want a son of his. If he gave me 6 lovely daughters I will count my blessings as I love each and every one of them. I just cannot wrap my head around 6 pullets, from my own flock. It does not happen to me.

Now, here is 4 examples of silkie roosters listed local to me in the last few weeks. This is just from 1 of my local livestock and poultry facebook groups.

The first boy. As much as I want a Branch son, I am kicking myself for not inquiring the minute it hit. Color aside, this is the body type and look that I am looking for in a rooster. The color was just icing on the cake. He hit Thanksgiving evening just as dinner was getting done. 3 hours later when I had time to sit back down he had already sold. 30 minutes away. Quality boys are near me if I am patient.

These 3 are currently available, 10 to 15 minutes away and for someone looking for a boy good priced. For me, they are automatic passes. I'm not passing because of their color, I am passing because of their combs and wattle sizes, shape and color. Ideal wattle and comb color for a silkie is the deep mulberry to black color. It should never be bright red. Wattles should also not be nearly that big. Tiny wattles even on a roo. Also no straight combs either.

This is like my Jaffara, and Sue. They are total unknowns to me.

I would also throw in there the Starlight Green Egger which has a 5% chance of laying brown eggs.

And the Olive Egger which also has a chance of throwing brown eggs.

I think Jaffarra is an olive egger as she lays olive eggs and has that funky topknot and squiggle comb.
