Browsing through Hoover's brown egg layers, they have in red tones:

RIR
Production Red
Buckeye
Red Star
Rainbow
Cinnamon Queen
Partridge Plymouth Rock
Partridge Chantecler
Partridge Cochin

The partridges and the Buckeye can all be eliminated due to the chevrons on the feathers, comb type, feathered feet type traits.

Rainbow has to stay on the maybe list due to anything goes, but is unlikely as it usually has a straight comb.

RIR, Red Star, Production Red, and Cinnamon Queen are all VERY similar with the RIR being the darkest (by just a smidge). The description of the CQ does state they can be straight or rose combed. That makes it the most likely at the moment, with Production Red being next on the list (no genetic history is provided)
And I think my Patches and Silver are Sapphire Olive Eggers. Not sure what colour they are laying though.

Wave a Marie wing to our old chicken neighbors who moved to 2.5 acres in Flagstaff at the 3300 ft level! They are enjoying raising chickens, ducks, geese, quail, rabbits, & goats now! They're living their dream.

I tipped my wing. So beautiful down there.

Ok everyone, I am heading to the barn, believe it or kot it is just pelting down rain here - haven’t checked the weather but would be surprised if flood warnings are out. The ground is (was) frozen, so run off into the water shed will be extreme.

Mother Nature is really losing her marbles!

Good night everyone

Fly safe Alex.

Re: silkie roo shopping

I know the roo doesn't work (straight, red comb), but the sweeties with him would be a great start on the joint feather duster shop

Nice silkies.

Since we have tagged alex to join the fun rooster shopping I need to explain to everyone why I am not jumping the gun yet and buying a boy right this second.

My group of 6 are 6 months old. You would think I would have known if there was a cockerel in it by now but silkies are difficult. With Branch, he had a sibling who I swore was a pullet right up until the day at 6 months old he crowed at me. There is only 1 way to be sure if you do not DNA sex. Wait until they either crow or lay a egg. I am waiting. Ideally, I have a Branch son who is torturing me. I say ideally because I miss my boy, I really want a son of his. If he gave me 6 lovely daughters I will count my blessings as I love each and every one of them. I just cannot wrap my head around 6 pullets, from my own flock. It does not happen to me.

Now, here is 4 examples of silkie roosters listed local to me in the last few weeks. This is just from 1 of my local livestock and poultry facebook groups.

The first boy. As much as I want a Branch son, I am kicking myself for not inquiring the minute it hit. Color aside, this is the body type and look that I am looking for in a rooster. The color was just icing on the cake. He hit Thanksgiving evening just as dinner was getting done. 3 hours later when I had time to sit back down he had already sold. 30 minutes away. Quality boys are near me if I am patient.

These 3 are currently available, 10 to 15 minutes away and for someone looking for a boy good priced. For me, they are automatic passes. I'm not passing because of their color, I am passing because of their combs and wattle sizes, shape and color. Ideal wattle and comb color for a silkie is the deep mulberry to black color. It should never be bright red. Wattles should also not be nearly that big. Tiny wattles even on a roo. Also no straight combs either.

I agree that red comb/wattles is definitely not going to give you a Silkie breeding. Stay away from mixes. You do well to fine tune & stick to true Silkies. (Unless you want mixes).

YAY! I got new shoes today! Finally! It's been 2 years. But I have to wait to actually get them until the 25th.

They're House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones) shoes. I don't watch either of those shows. I haven't read the books (well, I watched the first few seasons of GoT about a decade ago). But I saw these shoes and I thought, holy crap, those are cool!

And since my grandma used to work for Wolverine, she gets a discount when she buys shoes from there. She got herself, my dad and I each a pair of shoes and got a 65% discount! So what would have been a few hundred bucks was just under $150! What a great gift ☺️

Nice day for a bath pile... It's almost 50⁰F!
A wonderful gift. I also have red sneakers. I think they are very stylish!
