lol And right there is my 1st problem! I'm vegetarian [ok, ok most of my friends eat meat] & raising chicks entails an awful lot of unwanted roosters & there's really only one thing to do with an unwanted rooster...
:(

A family down the road has a smaller [but very flat] property & raises both meat & egg birds but his set up stinks ~ literally. You can smell it out on the road & I am sorry for his birds. I'm happy to have a smaller but sustainable flock that will hopefully calm down in the very near future.
How long have you been a vegetarian? I eat a vegan diet for six years. I've eaten a vegetarian diet on and off for may more. Because I rarely buy shop meat even with eating the occasional chicken here my meat consumption is very very low.
I eat meat now more on principle than anything else. Managing what you can't house and feed if you decide to keep chickens in the way I do is part of the responsibility. All the farms and smallholding here have chickens so there isn't much scope for selling them or even giving them away unless someone is looking for a breeding pair.

On off since I left home in my 20's. The Dr & I had a tussle every time I fell pregnant because my iron count dropped dramatically & he would insist I add meat back into my diet. It never helped. My youngest decided to go vegetarian about 15 years ago so I joined her. I have to be pretty creative with it as my man still eats meat & I'm the cook.

clearly I have WON at the cockerel lottery!

Then I figured “my pretty Olive egger boy might not give me eggs, but let’s see what we can do with his daughters before he goes to Freezer camp for being a jerk?”

I had to laugh, you have such a way with words! :lau I don’t envy you though! ;)

It’s very hard to maintain a vegetarian diet in a healthy way for most people, so I have a lot of respect for those who do it. Once you know how it’s not too bad, but a problem I’ve seen here in North America is that a lot of vegetarians and vegans don’t manage their diets properly... beer and Chips are vegan... I could totally do it too! :p Granted there’s a lot of meat eating North Americans with awful diets as well!

We had one cashier have to stop working completely because of her iron issues, and no matter what she wouldn’t budge on the “vegan is healthier and animals have rights” issues. Seriously underweight, anemic, and she literally fainted and collapsed several times while working the till. At 21 years old she was actually one of the least healthy people I’ve ever met.

Thanks! He’s a lucky jerk that I have both the room and patience to put up with his nonsense... and that his Daughters are laying the pretty eggs I originally ordered him for!

My Barnvelders, Marans, and Isbars have all pretty much stopped laying for the winter but his daughters are just starting... center carton are theirs.
@BY Bob, if I could bring you some of the Green Layers across the border... I would ;) and their Daddy reminds me of a slightly more colorful Jabber, in looks and attitude!

I’m looking at those 4 meat bird eggs and considering if I can somehow swing the electricity to run the incubator... I’m also half considering sneaking it into my moms cabin type thing... (no one enable me... please! I shouldn’t have tried the last hatch... and there’s no way I can convince Andrew to let me brood in the trailer over winter )

I had ENOUGH Tonight

I believe in letting the grils settle their own pecking order issues. I observe but try not to interfere. However tonight was insane. Lilly had lost her mind. she was going up and down the roost knocking everyone off. It was like a game of king of the hill when you were a kid. She would knock someone off at one end and go to the other, knock someone off there then out on the enxtension to get someone. She NEVER goes on the extension. Then back to the other end, knocking hens off everywhere, it did not matter who. Squawk, Thump, Squawk, Thump, Squawk, Thump. At one point everyone was down and she was wiing for someone to get up so she could knock them off. I have never seen such behaviour before.

So I intervened.

I removed Lilly.

I made her sit with me until it was too dark for her to mess with anyone. Everyone else settled down immediately. Maleficent even left the good spot for when Lilly came back.

Everyone is resting quietly now. So strange. i will have to get video tomorrow if it happens again.

At this point for any egg layer I may just be willing to defy international livestock laws.

Chickens are crazy sometimes! I think you made a good call, sometimes you just have to be the Big Featherless Rooster that puts the girls back in order! Hopefully it was just a one time thing
