Big Doings at FBA

Hello everyone. I am back. Thanks for bearing with me. The loss of Nimue was a real shock and really has me still reeling. However, life goes on and the chickens need my attention.

After I finished grieving and got back to observing the flock, this is what I found.

The flock was locked in the complex for 5 days after the attack so that the hawk wound be encouraged to move on and so that, hopefully, Niamh would find someone to hang out with and perhaps merge with the main flock.

Well merging did not happen. Lady Featherington scares the life out of her. Sydney is not kind as well. She can hang with Aurora, no issues there. Aster will peck her but not run her off. No one has accepted her to be their friend. Any hope that Aster wants a traveling buddy has been dashed. She is a loner by choice.

This led us to consider other options.

Yesterday, we went to a swap meet and found a polish that is a little younger than Niamh. Her name is Joy. She is in quarantine until I can get her tested to confirm she is not carrying anything. Eve named her and considers Joy to be her chicken.

Joy is in Hattie House under quarantine. She looks to be around 4.5 months old.

The plan is to introduce her to Niamh at night in the Cluckle Hut. As she is younger than Niamh I am hopeful Niamh will teach her and they will bond.

More to come!
This is such an amazing turn Bob! I hope those two will love each other! 💗

I know this now is for your ongoing medkit, not immediate use.

Here's what I did about tube-feeding supplies, based on advice and info from @RoyalChick . I also got very good training from the vet I brought Butters to.

Maybe your vet has come through, or can supply you with a prescription so you have them on hand when you need them.

I bought the red tubes from Amazon, also syringes to supposedly fit, but none worked out well for me, which is too bad. @BY Bob

I might have had the wrong syringe tip for them or they sent the wrong syringe end tip tubes. Tubes were big but doable, but they slipped off the syringe way too easily under pressure. Tip end clogged easily. Picture baby bird formula all over me, the walls, Butters, etc.

So I looked around and got more catheters, straight-tip, from Vitality Medical. I got 14, 16 and 18 French size. I think for Butters I used the 14.
Well-designed, did not clog, very smooth, and the right stiffness.

I had a phone call with them which was interesting; in the checkout process it was all smooth until I hit a snag about a prescription or authorization proving I needed the catheters for medical use, which I had not seen on the item page. I called them and told them that it wasn't for me but for a sick chicken who was not eating on her own and I needed to tube-feed her. I think I told them I had had training from the vet too and been given a short-term supply. The response was basically No, that they aren't made for non-human use, or something. Then the rep went away to talk to a supervisor and came back with the news they had decided I needed them for "a" medical use, even if it was for a chicken and not a human, and I didn't need a prescription. They would sell me the catheters.

Then from @RoyalChick 's tip I got good feeding syringes from the Squirrel Guy, who seems to have changed the web site around, and for feeding supplies to redirect to the Miracle Nipple web site https://miraclenipple.com/pages/see-all-four-sizes-of-the-miracle-nipple

The "miracle" is the O-ring that will work for multiple uses before it gets too stiff to plunge. The previous feeding syringes I got only worked best for maybe three feedings. Be sure you get the syringe tip made for catheters, whatever syringe you get.

Very thorough recount - good info!

My Vet was able to source me a few catheters - they are smaller (size wise) than I would like but they will do the job.

There are luer lock syringes you can try also with catheters that have the luer lock end.

Yay!!! He is looking regal again! Please don't mohawk him - his topknot is glorious😍😍😍

But he runs into things! And can’t see predators! I tried a man-bun and it didn’t work so well.

Good Tilly!🥰

:lol:Hmmm, Niamh sounds like the rebellious teen if you ask me!
She has always wanted to sleep outside. It was Nimue who got her to sleep inside. I am very worried how this will go with the new girls when they are united.
