I thought the same!
Did someone say Emu? How many neck bones do chickens have anyway?

The whole reason I ended up swapping those Barred Rocks recently was because we got chatting after I messaged the breeder to (jokingly!) ask for my money back, as one of the "Shetland hens" he'd sold me was quite clearly crossed with a giraffe.

Now I have an emu from the same hatch.

Well I never thought I would see the day when Tassels gave up her favorite roosting spot.
It is the most prized spot - right up against the wall on the right. Every lead hen I have had always claims that spot and even mild mannered Tassels has made it more than clear on multiple occasions that nobody, I mean nobody, gets that spot.
Until last night.

Look who got the spot. It’s Cookie!

Since he's so young maybe he ought to apply to be a royal Squire first? Like an apprentice Knight.
PS I'd like to see more pictures of him!
What? His front page picture on CQ magazine isn’t enough? (Chicken Quarterly magazine)

I guess if that was the Head Hen spot because it feels most protected, then she's still being a good mum and keeping them safe even now they're roosting. I wonder if she'll insist on taking the spot back once they're older and she feels like they can manage entirely by themselves.

Agree it will be interesting to see how it evolves. She is certainly still very protective of them and for sure without her there right by them Calypso would knock them off and claim the spot.

At my age I don't need speckled birds... I always see spots before my eyes anyway😵‍💫

Vertigo - it’s my big thing here, it’s brutal looking up at the stall wall sitters. I have to hold the wall to look up and chase them off the walls. And looking down to find eggs. I get all spinny and have to close my eyes.

Don’t fall down in the barn - those velociraptors will be on you in a flash!!!

Awww she’s small enough she can squeeze in, too cute!

I find that the babies/youngsters can get away with a lot, but when they get near egg laying age that’s when all heck breaks loose.

Then once they have been laying a couple months things settle down again.
