Impressive piece of kit! I am trying to decide whether to have an automated door for the Chicken Palace. My initial thought is not to go automated particularly because the whole point of the 'palace' is that it has (will have) a predator secure run. I am thinking of making their door slide sideways rather than up and down and close it manually - probably only in really extreme cold. Welcome any suggestions!

Unlike most on here my biggest issues are extreme heat, not cold. My coop has an attached run with a run extension. The coop is completely open to the east allowing the girls to self regulate their rising & roosting. I do check on everyone each evening & the coop is secure ~ it just has no door. I have a curtain I can drop if the wind gets up too much but in summer it's rarely used.

Different solutions for different challenges. In general heat is never an issue for me, sub zero temperatures and wind chills are so I need a good door. I also need a system that works without human input as I am not always home and I cannot rely on my significant other to close the coop every night.

Hence the automated door.

Too many times the door was left open when I checked the camera.

Happy Anniversary

One year ago today I started this thread. I need to thank all of you who have taken the time to read and post here. This has more than exceeded my expectations. What started as a way to record the stories of my flock has become a community. A community where we welcomed a few more members even in the last few days.

I treasure all of you and look forward to another year of stories and fun.

Happy Anniversary for your thread @BY Bob I've been outside working the yard and the coop most of the day because it's been so nice out there. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice also, so I can get out there and do some more. No, the 6 egg's haven't hatched yet.

I'm the one with the extreme summer heat, so I understand what you are going though. I live in the desert over here.

Yes, it's a whole different ball game, isn't it. :D

Yes, it sure is! Lot's of ventilation and shade, and plenty of water for drinking and walking through. That's why I'm going with the naked Neck's, as they handle this heat better. I like the big fluffy breed's but they have the roughest time with this heat over here, so I can only admire them here on this site.

Most of my girls are single combed, because they do better in the heat but my bantam is a rose comb & does ok. We do get a sea breeze most days which helps.

Mine are all single combed too, except for the 2 younger olive egger's. They have the peacomb's and possibly too much feathering for summer's here. I'm not near ocean, sea, or lake so none of that breeze over here. Just a dry heat, except for when we have the monsoon season.
